The Same Hour Every Day

It is about four, and it has been about four for a long time, and everything else in the day has quietly arranged itself around it.

That is the part he would not have believed if you had told him five years ago. Not the drinking. The scheduling.

He does the hard jobs in the morning now, because he knows what he is like after. He does not arrange to see anybody after five, and if somebody suggests it he finds a reason, and the reasons are always good and he has a lot of them. He does the school run only if it is the morning one. He stopped going to the Thursday thing about two years ago and told them it was the drive.

Nobody has said anything. He is not falling over in the street. There has never been a scene. He is by any outside measure a functioning man with a business and a family and a decent reputation in that valley.

And the hour has been choosing the shape of his days for about five years, and he has never once said that out loud.

There was a Tuesday in February when he got to about six and realized he had not, and he felt so strange about it that he had one anyway at seven to settle the strangeness.

That is you, and the scheduling is the thing to look at, not the hour.

Three things before we go any further

The first, and it is the most important thing on this page. If stopping suddenly is something you have thought about, talk to a doctor first. With some things the stopping is the dangerous part, and there is no version of faith anywhere in Scripture that runs through a man harming himself in the process of doing better. Getting medical advice is not a lesser road than praying and it never was. That is Scripture's sentence and not mine, Psalm 40:2, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who makes it true where you are.

The second. If there are people who work with this near you, go. That is not a failure and it is not an admission of anything. It is a man using what is in front of him, and Scripture has no category in which practical help competes with God.

The third. Nothing on this page is going to tell you that you did not want it enough, or that a person with real faith would have stopped by now. That idea has done more damage in this area than almost anything else, and it is not in the Bible.

You are not carrying this because you failed at wanting. Scripture says God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, 1 Corinthians 10:13, and it puts the faithfulness on His side of the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that into a kitchen at four in the afternoon.

The verbs in the psalm are all His

There is a line in Psalm 40 where a man describes being got out of something, and the grammar of it is the whole point.

He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.Psalm 40:2

Count the verbs and look at who owns them. He brought. He set. He established. Four actions in one sentence and every single one belongs to God, and the man in the pit is not described as doing anything at all except being brought.

That matters here more than anywhere, because you have five years of evidence about what your own lifting can achieve. You have tried. You have had good stretches. You know exactly what it feels like to be doing it on your own strength and to watch the strength run out at a predictable rate. Scripture stands under that in Psalm 40:2, and the Holy Spirit does the part no sentence can do.

And miry clay is the right image, because clay is not a wall. You do not get thrown out of clay in one movement. You get drawn out of it slowly and it does not let go cleanly.

You are not the one who has to do the lifting. Scripture says he brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, Psalm 40:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the bringing rather than standing at the top of it shouting instructions.

The scheduling is the confession

Here is what I would want you to see most, and it is not about how much.

Everybody in this area measures the wrong thing. The question people ask is about quantity, and quantity is exactly the thing you can argue about, and you have been arguing about it with yourself for five years and winning. It is written, in Psalm 40:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written off a page and into a life.

The measure that tells the truth is the scheduling.

You moved the hard jobs. You stopped arranging evenings. You dropped the Thursday. You take the morning school run only. Not one of those was a decision about drinking; every one of them was a decision about protecting the hour, and they were all made quietly, and none of them was announced.

That is what it looks like when something has moved from being a thing you do to being the fixed point everything else bends around.

And I am not saying that to shame you. I am saying it because it is the honest description, and because you have never had the honest description available in a form you could look at, and a thing nobody has ever described cannot be brought anywhere.

You are not a bad man with a schedule. Scripture says if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, 1 John 1:9, and the whole weight of that sentence is on His faithfulness rather than on the quality of the confessing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an honest description feel survivable.

Say it to one person

Nothing has any traction while this lives entirely inside one head, and yours has for five years.

One person. Not the valley and not a meeting unless you want one. One human being who will not flinch and will not lecture and will not make it their project.

And say the true sentence, which is not about quantity. My day is organized around a particular hour and it has been for about five years.

That sentence is harder than a number and it is far more useful, because it is the one you cannot argue yourself out of afterwards.

You were not meant to be doing this in a sealed room. Scripture says confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed, James 5:16, and the healing in that verse is attached to the telling rather than to the achieving, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a sentence like that out of a man who has been managing on his own for five years.
