I Cannot Find the Start of It

This message is for one thing you said years ago that was not true, that has been maintained ever since, and that is now too large and too old to simply put down

It was not a plan. That is the thing he would most want understood if he ever told anybody, which he will not.

It was one sentence, said quickly, in a moment when the true version would have been embarrassing and the other version was already halfway out of his mouth. He was not proud of it that evening and he assumed it would simply pass.

It did not pass, because somebody remembered it, and referred to it a month later in front of two other people, and he agreed.

That is where it became a structure.

Now it is years old. He could not tell you the exact date any more, which is its own particular horror: the thing has been in his life long enough to have lost its own beginning.

And it costs him. Not dramatically, and never at a moment anybody would notice, but constantly. He has to remember what people believe. He has to steer certain conversations, gently, away from certain corners. There are two people he avoids being in a room with at the same time. There is a whole area of his life he keeps slightly vague, and being vague takes work, and after all these years the work is simply part of how he lives.

The worst of it is what it has done to the good parts. When somebody says something admiring, he cannot receive it, because he is standing behind a thing they do not know.

He has thought about telling the truth perhaps a thousand times. And every time he runs it forward and sees what it would do now, at this distance, to people who have arranged things around it, and he decides it is too late, and it gets one week older.

That is you, and it is not too late, and it is also not simple.

I Cannot Find the Start of It

Four things before we go anywhere

The first. I am not going to shame you. You already do that at a level nobody around you can see, and adding to it would keep you exactly where you are, because shame is what has been paying for the maintenance all these years. Scripture settles that in John 8:32, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.

The second. I do not know your situation. There are things a person might be maintaining that need a lawyer, or where telling the truth badly could genuinely harm someone who has no part in this. If yours is one of those, this page is not the whole of your answer and you need somebody who can hear the specifics.

The third. I am not going to tell you to announce it. Broadcast confession is not the same thing as honesty, and it usually serves the confessor's relief more than anybody else's good.

The fourth. Whatever this is, it is not the biggest thing anybody has ever brought to God, and you have been half assuming it might be.

You are not beyond the reach of this because of how long it has run. Scripture says if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, 1 John 1:9, and there is no clause in it about how old the sin is, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in a workshop doorway with a man who has been doing this for years.

The verse is about a condition, not a reward

There is a sentence of Jesus that has been printed on more things than almost any other, and it is regularly quoted with the first half missing.

And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.John 8:32

Make you free. Free from what?

Read it in the context of a man in your position and it becomes very concrete. Not free from consequences; He does not say that. Free from the work.

Because that is what you are actually serving. Not a lie, exactly. A maintenance contract. Years of small adjustments, of remembering who believes what, of steering, of two people who must not be in a room together. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in John 8:32, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.

Truth is described here as the thing that ends the work. It does not promise the conversation will go well. It promises that afterwards you will not be holding anything upright.

And notice: ye shall know the truth. Know is a word about being on the inside of something. He is not offering you information. He is offering you a place to stand where nothing has to be managed.

You are not going to be freed by better management. Scripture says ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free, John 8:32, and freedom is attached to the truth rather than to how skilfully a thing is held, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the freeing rather than the exposing.

The compound interest

Here is what nobody tells you about a thing like this, and you have felt it without naming it. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in John 8:32, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.

The original sentence is not what costs you now. It was one evening, years ago, and by itself it would have been forgettable.

What costs you is everything built since: the month later, the two other people, the vagueness, the avoiding. None of that was lying, exactly. Each piece was a small silence or a small steer, and each one seemed smaller than the disruption of correcting it, and that arithmetic has been run several hundred times and has come out the same way every time.

That is why it feels impossible now. You are not weighing one sentence against the truth. You are weighing years of structure against it. Scripture holds that ground in John 8:32, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.

And the arithmetic will keep coming out the same way for the rest of your life, because it is not designed to resolve. Every week it gets one week more expensive to undo, which means waiting for a moment when it feels manageable is waiting for a thing that recedes as you approach it.

You are not trapped by arithmetic. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, Psalm 34:18, and He is described as near to the man in the middle of it rather than waiting at the far end for him to sort it out, and the Holy Spirit has been present through every one of those calculations.

Who it is actually costing

You think the cost is risk. It is not; it is presence.

Because you cannot be fully in a room where something is being held. Some part of you is always on duty, tracking, checking, and that part has not been off in years.

That is why the admiring comment cannot land. That is why certain friendships have a ceiling you cannot explain. That is why there is a low background tiredness in your life that no amount of sleep touches.

Your family has a version of you that is about eighty per cent present. They have never known the other twenty per cent existed, because they have never seen it.

And that is the honest reason to deal with this, and it is a better reason than guilt. Not to be punished. To be all the way in the room.

You are not required to live at eighty per cent. Scripture says if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, 1 John 1:7, and fellowship in that verse is what becomes possible once nothing is being held, and the Holy Spirit is not the one who has kept you on duty all this time.

The breakthrough

I am not going to tell you what to say or to whom, because I do not know your situation and anybody who does that from a distance is being reckless with your life.

What changes this week is that one other person knows.

One. Not the people involved, not yet, and possibly not ever in some cases. One person outside the whole thing: a pastor, a counselor, one friend with no stake in it. Say the plain version out loud, including the fact that you cannot find the start of it.

That is the shout on the staircase. It does not put the door down. It puts somebody at the other end, and everything after that becomes possible in a way it is not right now.

Then let that person help you work out what honesty actually requires here, because it is not the same in every case, and it takes wisdom rather than nerve, and you have been trying to decide it alone at two in the morning with no one to check it against.

You are not going to be freed by holding this better, and the freedom on offer is freedom from the work. Scripture says the truth shall make you free, John 8:32, and the Holy Spirit has been near through every year of this and has never once been the voice calling it too late.

So write the true version down tonight, and find your one person this week.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on your own, holding it. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given to you and no number of years withdraws it. Scripture carries every line here and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. Nothing here sets God a date and nothing here promises how anybody will react; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a verdict on you.

  1. Work of keeping one old sentence upright, you have taken years off me and I am not doing you any more. The Word of God says the truth shall make you free, and in the name of Jesus I stop waiting for a week when this will be cheaper to put down.
  2. Arithmetic that has told me a thousand times that it is too late now, get out of this house. Scripture says if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, 1 John 1:9, and the Holy Spirit has never once attached an expiry date to that verse.
  3. Lord, You offered freedom from the holding and not from the consequences, and You have been near for every year of this. I am writing the true version down tonight, and I am telling one person outside all of it this week.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
