The Parcels I Do Not Open

There are four in the hall. One of them has been there since before the bank holiday.

She knows what is in all of them, roughly. A jumper. Something for the kitchen that she saw and thought would be nice and has not thought about since. Two she genuinely could not tell you.

The ordering happens at about eleven. It has a shape to it that she could describe in detail if anybody ever asked, which nobody does. The house has gone quiet. There is a particular kind of flatness that arrives at that hour, not sadness exactly, a sort of low static. And then there is a screen, and about twenty minutes, and during those twenty minutes something in her settles.

That is the bit worth noticing. It settles while she is choosing. By the time it is confirmed the settling has already started to go, and by the time the thing arrives four days later it is entirely gone, which is why the boxes sit in the hall.

She is not in trouble over it. It is not thousands and there is no debt, and that is almost the difficulty, because there is nothing forcing the issue and nothing to point at.

She knows it is not about the things. She worked that out ages ago and it did not help at all, which is the frustrating part: knowing what a thing is has never once stopped her doing it at eleven o'clock.

And there is a small feeling every time she walks past the hall, and it is not guilt about money. It is something more like being caught out by herself.

That is you, and the twenty minutes are what you are actually buying.

What this page is not

I am not going to give you a budget. You do not have a money problem in the technical sense and a spreadsheet would miss the entire point.

I am not going to tell you that wanting nice things is worldly. It is not, and that particular guilt has been used on women for a very long time and it does not free anybody.

I am not going to shame you. There is nothing at the bottom of shame except more of the same at eleven o'clock, because shame is one of the reliable producers of the exact flatness this runs on.

And if there is real debt here, if the number frightens you, that is a different article and a different kind of help, and a free debt adviser is a genuinely good thing that exists.

You are not held in contempt over four boxes in a hall. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, Psalm 34:18, and near is where He is rather than a reward for having sorted yourself out, and the Holy Spirit is present in a hallway at eleven at night without a single opinion about the jumper.

The verse asks a question rather than giving a rule

There is a line in Isaiah that is a question, and the question is unusually gentle for a prophet.

Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.Isaiah 55:2

Notice he does not say stop. He asks why, and the why is not about waste. It is about a thing that satisfieth not, which is a description of an outcome rather than a moral judgement on a transaction.

He is saying: you are spending on something that does not do the job, and the reason I am asking is that I want you fed. Scripture already said it in Isaiah 55:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.

And look at what comes next. Let your soul delight itself in fatness. That is not the language of restriction. It is the language of a full table. The alternative he offers to the thing that does not satisfy is not going without; it is something richer.

This is the tone I want you to hear the whole of this page in. Nobody here is trying to take the twenty minutes away from you. Somebody is asking what the twenty minutes were supposed to be doing, and offering something that does it.

You are not being told off for a habit. Scripture says wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread, Isaiah 55:2, and it is a question asked by somebody who wants you fed rather than corrected, and the Holy Spirit does not open with a rebuke where God opened with a question.

What eleven o'clock actually is

Let me be specific about the mechanism, because you already know it is not about the things and that knowledge has not moved anything, and I think it is because the description has been slightly wrong.

The static at eleven is not boredom. It is what arrives when a person stops moving after a day of holding a lot. All day there is a shape: work, people, tasks, the next thing. At eleven the shape stops, and what has been underneath it all day comes up, and it is not dramatic and it has no name and it is genuinely unpleasant.

The screen at that moment does something very precise. Choosing is absorbing. It occupies exactly the part of you that the static was rising into. It is not pleasure; look at how quickly it goes.

So you are not buying a jumper. You are buying twenty minutes in which the low static is not audible, and it works, briefly, which is why you have done it a hundred times. None of that is mine to declare on my own. Scripture said it first in Isaiah 55:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings it the distance.

And it never lasts, because a thing that only occupies is not a thing that rests. It is a distraction wearing rest's coat.

You are not in the grip of something mysterious. Scripture says come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest, Matthew 11:28, and the rest in that sentence is given rather than bought, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is at work at exactly that hour on exactly that static.

The hall is doing something to you

Four unopened boxes are not a moral failure and I am not going to treat them as one.

But they are having an effect, and it is the small feeling you get walking past, which you described to yourself as being caught out.

Here is what that is. Unopened parcels are physical evidence of a pattern you have not yet looked at directly, sitting in a place you walk through eleven times a day. They keep the thing on a low simmer, all day, without ever quite becoming a conversation. Scripture put that in writing long before you read it here, in Isaiah 55:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes written words land.

That is worse than either dealing with it or not.

So the hall is where I would start, and not because of tidiness. Open them or send them back, all four, this week. Not as penance. As a way of ending the daily reminder that has been keeping a small shame warm without ever bringing it into the light.

You are not required to live beside a pile of evidence. Scripture says if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, 1 John 1:7, and walking in the light is about a thing being seen rather than about a thing being flawless, and the Holy Spirit is not the one who taught you to walk past a hall quickly.
