He has moved four families in this street. He has a van and he has always had a van and that is simply what happens.
He lent somebody eleven hundred pounds in 2019 and never mentioned it again, to them or to anybody. He sat with a neighbor in a hospital corridor for six hours in the middle of a night. He does the thing at the school every year that nobody else volunteers for.
He is not a saint about it. He would tell you he likes doing it, and that is true, and there is something else in it as well that he has never examined.
Now the work has gone. Not dramatically; the contract was not renewed and the next one has not come, and it has been eleven weeks and there is a number at the end of the month that will not be met.
There are, at a conservative count, six people in his life who would help him within the hour. He knows their names. He could list them.
He will not ring any of them.
He has told himself various things about why. That it is not that bad yet. That they have their own situations. That he will sort it. That he would rather not, in a phrase that ends the conversation with himself before it begins.
What he has not said, because he has never had to look at it, is the actual reason, which is this: he does not know who he is on the other end of that call.
Thirty years of being the man who helps has become the whole of his sense of his own worth, and asking would put him in the other chair, and he has no idea how to sit in it.
That is you, and being unable to ask is not strength.

Three things, and the practical ones first
Nothing here asks you for money and nothing on this site is behind anything.
Nothing here says your finances reflect your faith. Eleven weeks without a contract is a labor market, not a verdict.
And before the spiritual part: check what is available. A benefits check from Citizens Advice, free, this week, with the real figures. Men in your position routinely do not check, on the assumption that it is not for people like them, and a very large amount goes unclaimed every year on exactly that assumption.
Talk to whoever the number at the end of the month is owed to, before the date rather than after. People who are told in advance behave completely differently from people who are chased.
You are not in this because you did something wrong. Scripture says I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound, Philippians 4:12, and Paul writes it from inside the lean half, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is steady with a man in week eleven with a van and no work for it.
The verse is an instruction to ask
There is a line in Hebrews that is usually read as being about prayer in general, and it is worth reading as a man who cannot make a phone call.
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.Hebrews 4:16
Look at what it assumes about the person coming.
In time of need. The verse is addressed to somebody who has a need, not to somebody managing well. Need is the qualifying condition rather than the embarrassment.
Boldly. Not apologetically. Not once it has become desperate enough to justify. Boldly, which in that context means with freedom of speech, the way somebody talks who has a right to be in the room.
Obtain mercy, and find grace to help. The purpose of the coming is to receive. There is no version of this verse in which the honorable thing is to stay outside and manage.
So the whole arrangement, from God's side, has receiving built into it. You have spent thirty years constructing a version of yourself for whom receiving is a failure, and that version cannot obey this verse.
You are not disqualified by need; you are qualified by it. Scripture says let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need, Hebrews 4:16, and boldness is prescribed rather than permitted, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a man who has never asked for anything to open his mouth.
What thirty years built
Let me name what is actually happening, because it is not simply pride and calling it pride would be too easy.
Thirty years of being the helper builds a position. In every relationship you have, there is a direction of flow, and you are the source. That is not vanity; it is a genuine and good thing and a great many people have been carried by it. Scripture already said it in Hebrews 4:16, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.
But it has one hidden cost, and you are now standing in it. If your worth is located in being the one who gives, then needing something is not merely uncomfortable. It threatens the whole structure, because it puts you in a position you have no experience of occupying and no sense of who you are inside. None of that is mine to declare on my own. Scripture said it first in Hebrews 4:16, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings it the distance.
That is why the six names are unringable. It is not that you think they would refuse. It is that you do not know what you become on that call.
And there is something worth seeing here. Every one of those six people has been on the receiving end of you, and none of them experienced it as humiliating. You did not think less of any of them. Not once.
The rule you apply to yourself is one you have never applied to another human being in your life.
You are not diminished by needing something. Scripture says bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ, Galatians 6:2, and the law requires somebody willing to be carried or it cannot be kept at all, and the Holy Spirit is at work in the person doing the carrying as much as in the one who carried for thirty years.
What you are taking from them
Here is the part that will move you when nothing else does, because it is not about you.
When you refuse to ask, you are not being modest. You are keeping six people in a fixed position: permanently in your debt, permanently on the receiving end, never once permitted to give anything back. Scripture put that in writing long before you read it here, in Hebrews 4:16, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes written words land.
That is not a small thing to do to somebody who loves you. Being unable to reciprocate is uncomfortable, and you have made it structural. I have no authority to say that by myself. Scripture carries it in Hebrews 4:16, and the Holy Spirit carries it to you.
The man you sat with in a corridor for six hours has been looking for a way to be useful to you for years. You have never given him one. If he found out in six months that this had been going on and you had said nothing, the thing he would feel would not be relief. It would be hurt.
You are not protecting anybody by staying silent. Scripture says it is more blessed to give than to receive, Acts 20:35, and if that is true then withholding the opportunity is withholding a blessing from people who love you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a man to let somebody else be the giver for once.
I cannot fix the month and I am not going to write a sentence that pretends otherwise.
What changes this week is one phone call.
Pick one of the six. Not the easiest one; the right one. Say the plain sentence: The work has not come in for eleven weeks and I am going to be short at the end of the month, and I have never asked anybody for anything in my life and I am asking now.
That is the whole call. You do not have to have a plan for how it is repaid and you do not have to justify it, and the person on the other end will not think less of you, because you have never once thought less of them. That is Scripture's sentence and not mine, Hebrews 4:16, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who makes it true where you are.
Do the practical things as well: the benefits check, the conversation before the date.
And notice what asking actually is. It is the thing Hebrews tells you to do boldly, and you have been calling the refusal of it strength for thirty years.
You are not made smaller by receiving, and the throne in that verse was described as approachable specifically in time of need. Scripture says find grace to help in time of need, Hebrews 4:16, and the Holy Spirit has been with a man who helped everybody through eleven weeks in which nobody knew he needed anything.
So ring one of them tonight.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, on your own, hand open. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given to you and eleven weeks without work have not withdrawn it. Scripture carries every line here and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. Nothing here sets God a date and nothing here trades anything for anything; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a verdict on you.
- Pride I have been calling self-sufficiency for thirty years, you are not a virtue and you are not staying in this house. The Word of God says come boldly unto the throne of grace in time of need, and in the name of Jesus I stop treating my own need as the one thing that disqualifies me.
- Rule that receiving is a failure, get out of this house. Scripture says bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ, Galatians 6:2, and the Holy Spirit has never once thought less of any of the six people I have carried.
- Lord, boldly is Your word and time of need is Your condition, and both of them describe exactly where I am standing. I am ringing one of them tonight with the plain sentence, and I am booking the benefits check this week.
