It comes on the Thursday and he opens it in the car, in the yard, before he drives home, and that is the whole of the routine now.
He knows the number before he looks. He looks anyway. Then he folds it twice and puts it under the manual in the glovebox with the other three, and drives home, and comes in, and says the thing he says, which is that it was fine, long, the usual.
March. That was when the hours went. Not a redundancy, nothing anybody would call an event, just a reorganization of the rota that took four hours a week off him and gave them to somebody with a different contract. His manager was decent about it and explained it properly and it was not personal and it is not coming back.
Four months.
She budgets on the old number. She does the food shop and the standing orders and the thing with the envelopes for the school stuff, and she does all of it carefully, and she does all of it on a figure that has not been true since the spring. And every month it does not quite work, and every month she says so, puzzled, at the table, and every month he says something about it being an expensive one and moves the conversation on.
He is not spending it on anything. That is the thing he would want you to know first. There is no secret. There is only a payslip in a glovebox and a man who could not find a way to say four hours out loud in his own kitchen.
That is you, and you did not decide to do this either.

Nothing on this page costs anything
Before anything else, and I want to be blunt about it because this is the subject where people are most often sold something.
Nobody here is going to tell you that a gift releases a supply. There is no amount you can send anywhere that changes a rota. There is no arrangement in which what you give determines what you receive, and any voice that puts a price in front of God's attention is not speaking for Him. Nothing on this page costs anything and nothing ever will.
And there is no financial advice here either. Not about the hours, not about the budget, not about what you might have done differently in March. You know your own household and I do not.
What is here is the one thing I can actually say. Scripture says your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him, Matthew 6:8, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that into a car in a yard on a Thursday rather than leaving it a pleasant idea about God.
Before you ask. Which means before March, and before the first folded payslip, and before any of the four conversations at the table where you said it was an expensive month.
The silence started as kindness
Let me be fair to you, because I do not think you began this badly.
In March it was genuinely reasonable. The change was new, you thought there might be overtime, and there was no sense worrying the whole house about a shortfall that might close itself in a fortnight. That was not deceit. That was a man absorbing a hit so that nobody else had to feel it, which is close to the center of what you understand your job to be.
The trouble is that a silence has a shelf life, and this one has quietly run past it.
Because now it is not protecting her from worry. Now it is producing the worry. She is doing arithmetic that will not come out, every month, on her own, and concluding that she is somehow doing it wrong. The exact distress you were trying to prevent is being manufactured monthly, in a different person, in a form she cannot solve because she does not have the number.
You have been carrying this alone, and it stopped being a kindness some time in April. Scripture says two are better than one, for if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, and the Holy Spirit does not require a man to hold a household's whole arithmetic in a glovebox in order to love it.
What is actually in the glovebox
Now the harder half, and I will say it gently because I do not think you have looked at it directly. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in Matthew 6:8, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.
Four payslips in a glovebox are not really about money.
If it were only money you would have said it in March, in one sentence, over dinner, the way you have said harder things than that in twenty years. What is in the glovebox is the sentence my hours were cut, and underneath that a much older sentence about what a man is worth if he brings home less than he did. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in Matthew 6:8, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.
That older sentence is not from Scripture. There is no verse anywhere that prices a person by their income, and if there were, most of the people God used in the Bible would have failed it. It came from somewhere else, probably from a long way back, and it has been running unexamined in you for a very long time.
You are not worth less this month than you were in February. Scripture says the Lord seeth not as man seeth, for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart, 1 Samuel 16:7, and the Holy Spirit has never once revised His view of a man because a rota moved.
Say the number out loud, twice
Here is the practical middle, and there are two halves to it and they are both small.
The first half is God, and it is the one you have skipped for four months. You have not brought Him a figure. You may have prayed about work in general, in the way a person prays about a subject rather than about a fact, but you have not said the amount. Scripture holds that ground in Matthew 6:8, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.
Say it. Not because He needs the information; the verse we are standing on says explicitly that He has it already. Say it because saying a specific true thing to somebody is what talking to them is, and because four months of the general is how a man keeps a conversation at arm's length without ever deciding to.
You are welcome in this conversation with the exact figure. Scripture says be careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplication let your requests be made known unto God, Philippians 4:6, and every thing is the widest word in that sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a man past the embarrassment far enough to say a number in a parked car.
The second half is her, and it is one sentence, and it does not need a plan attached to it.
My hours were cut in March and I have not been able to tell you.
That is the whole thing. You do not have to arrive with a solution first, which is what you have been waiting to do, and which is why it has taken four months. She is not waiting for a solution. She is waiting to stop doing arithmetic that will not come out. This rests on Scripture in Matthew 6:8, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.
You have been treating this as a money problem and it is not, or not mainly. It is a solitude problem, and you built it out of good intentions in March and have been maintaining it ever since. Scripture already said it in Matthew 6:8, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.
What changes tonight is not the shortfall. I do not know what happens to the hours and nobody who tells you they do is telling you the truth.
What changes is who is holding the figure. Right now it is one man in a car in a yard on a Thursday. By tonight it can be a man, his wife, and the God who had the number before March.
You are not the source of this household's provision and you never were. Scripture says your Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask him, Matthew 6:8, and the Holy Spirit has been in that kitchen through every one of the four months you spent saying it was an expensive one.
So take the four payslips out of the glovebox and bring them in. Say the number to God first, in the car, out loud, tonight. Then say the sentence to her, without a solution attached.
And let her be the second person who knows.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with your hand on the page. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given to you and no payslip takes it back. Scripture carries every line here and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings them the distance. There is no date being set for God in any of this; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a verdict on the kind of man you are.
- Four months of a number that is not true in this house, you are a silence and not a kindness, and you end tonight. The Word of God says my Father knows what I have need of before I ask Him, and in the name of Jesus I stop guarding a figure He has had since March.
- Older sentence underneath all of this, that a man is worth what he brings home, get out of this car. Scripture says the Lord looks on the heart and not on the outward appearance, 1 Samuel 16:7, and the Holy Spirit has never once repriced me because a rota moved.
- Father, You knew the amount before the first payslip went into that glovebox, and You have been in my kitchen through every expensive month. I am saying the figure out loud to You tonight and then to her, and I am not carrying this on my own any longer.
