It arrived eleven days after she died, and there was a line on it for something she had not known was a separate item, and she read the whole thing standing in the hall.
Then she sat down on the bottom stair and did arithmetic.
That is the part she cannot get past. Not the number, although the number is a genuine problem. It is that eleven days after her mother died she was on a stair working out whether a thing could be moved to a different month.
She has not cried much. There has not been room. There has been a certificate to collect, and a bank that required the certificate, and a different bank that required a different certificate, and a phone call in which somebody read her a script about how sorry they were and then asked her a security question.
The funeral was lovely. Everyone said so. She was standing at the back of her own mother's funeral thinking about a figure.
And there is a feeling underneath all of it that she cannot say to anybody, because it sounds mad. It feels like a betrayal. As though being practical about it, being competent, sorting it, is a kind of coldness towards a woman who deserved to be mourned properly and instead got a spreadsheet.
That is you, and the competence is not a betrayal.

What this page will not do
Nothing here will ask you for money, and nothing on this site is ever behind anything. If you have encountered a version of Christianity that has a payment in it near a moment like this one, that was not from God. Scripture stands under that in Psalm 10:14, and the Holy Spirit does the part no sentence can do.
Nothing here will suggest that the size of this bill says anything about your faith or hers. That teaching is at its most poisonous exactly here, on a stair, eleven days in.
And nothing here is a replacement for the practical help that exists. There are funeral payment schemes, hardship funds, and charities whose entire purpose is this specific situation, and a funeral director is legally required to give you a price list and many will discuss the account with somebody in your position. Citizens Advice does this every day of the week.
You are not in this because of anything you did or did not believe. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, Psalm 34:18, and it makes no exception for a broken heart currently holding a folder, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is nearest on the bottom stair.
The verse for the person nobody is looking after
There is a line in Psalm 10 that is about a very particular kind of person, and it is worth reading with your situation in mind.
Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.Psalm 10:14
The helper of the fatherless. In the world that psalm came out of, that phrase did not mean a sad child. It meant somebody with no one above them: no parent left to absorb a shock, no one to ring, nobody whose job it is to handle the thing.
That is you at the moment, and it may be the first time in your life it has been true. You have just become the generation that deals with it. It is written, in Psalm 10:14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written off a page and into a life.
And the verse does two things. First, thou hast seen it. Not felt sorry about it in general. Seen this. Second, it names God as the specific helper of exactly that position, which means the position you are in is one He has a named role for. Scripture settles that in Psalm 10:14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.
The poor committeth himself unto thee. Committeth is a handing-over word. It is what you do with a weight you cannot hold: you put it into somebody else's hands rather than continuing to hold it well.
You are not unlooked-after in this. Scripture says thou art the helper of the fatherless, Psalm 10:14, and it is written about precisely the person who has run out of anybody above them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a named role feel like an actual presence in a hallway.
The competence is not coldness
I want to take the betrayal apart, because it is doing you real damage and it is entirely wrong.
You did not choose the order of these events. Nobody does. The system that handles a death is administrative and fast and it does not wait for anybody to be ready, and it lands on whoever in the family is capable, which is you.
Doing it well is not evidence of a cold heart. It is what love does when love is handed a folder instead of a moment.
Every phone call you made was for her. The certificate, the bank, the second bank, the script, the security question. Nobody who did not love a woman deeply spends eleven days doing that on her behalf.
And here is what the betrayal feeling actually is, underneath. It is grief with nowhere to go. It has arrived, and it has found the whole house full of admin, and so it has turned itself into an accusation, because that was the only room left.
You did not fail to mourn her. Scripture says charity beareth all things, endureth all things, 1 Corinthians 13:7, and beareth is about carrying weight rather than about feeling something at the right moment, and the Holy Spirit knows exactly what eleven days of paperwork was.
The number, plainly
Let me be practical for a moment, because the spiritual half of this page is no use if the bill sits there.
Ring the funeral director. Not to argue. To say plainly that the amount is a difficulty and ask what arrangements they have. They have them. This is an enormously common conversation and they have it weekly, and most of them would far rather have it than send a third letter.
Ask whether there is a funeral payment scheme you qualify for. Ask a Citizens Advice office to check. If she had any policy, a union, a former employer, a trade body, a bank account with anything attached, ask.
And tell one person in the family the true figure. Not to demand anything from them. Because carrying a number alone is what turns a bill into a thing you sit on a stair with.
You are not required to hold this by yourself. Scripture says bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ, Galatians 6:2, and somebody has to be willing to be carried for that law to be fulfilled at all, and the Holy Spirit is at work in the person who takes half of it as much as in you.
I cannot pay this and I am not going to write a sentence that pretends there is a spiritual mechanism that will.
What can change this week is that you stop carrying two things at once.
Make the practical calls. The funeral director, the scheme, the advice office, in daylight, with somebody sitting next to you if you can. That is not a spiritual failure and it is not a lack of trust; it is the exact shape provision usually takes.
Then put the folder in a drawer and close it. Not forever. For the evening. There is nothing on that paperwork that improves by being looked at after nine at night, and a great deal in you that gets worse.
And let the betrayal go. Being capable was the last thing you did for her, and it was love, and it was not cold, and she would have known that instantly.
You are not unseen and you are not unhelped, and grief that arrives late is not grief that never came. Scripture says thou hast seen it, Psalm 10:14, and the Holy Spirit has been in every one of those eleven days, on the stair, with the arithmetic.
So make one call tomorrow. Then close the drawer.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the quiet house. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given to you and eleven days of admin have not withdrawn it. Scripture carries every line here and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. Nothing here sets God a date and nothing here trades anything for anything; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a verdict on you.
- Feeling that being practical about her funeral was a betrayal of her, you are not true and you are not staying in this house. The Word of God says He is the helper of the fatherless, and in the name of Jesus I refuse to read my own competence as coldness.
- Habit of sitting up after nine with paperwork that gets no better for being looked at, get out of this house. Scripture says bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ, Galatians 6:2, and the Holy Spirit has never once asked me to hold a number on my own on a stair.
- Lord, You have seen it, and You have a named role for exactly the person who has nobody above them any more. I am making the calls in daylight tomorrow, and I am telling one person the true figure, and tonight the drawer is shut.
