The heater is on wheels and it lives in the front room now, and everybody in that house has stopped noticing that it is not furniture.
November. It went on a Tuesday, and the man who came out was honest with them, which they were grateful for and which was also the worst part, because honest meant the figure.
So there is a system. The front room gets the heater from about four. Homework happens in there. The little one gets bathed in the evening with the door shut so the steam stays in, and everybody goes upstairs to cold bedrooms with a hot water bottle each, and nobody complains, and that is somehow the hardest bit.
It is April.
The quote is on the fridge, and then it was in a drawer, and now it is in the folder with the insurance things, which is how a piece of paper travels through a house when nobody has a plan for it.
They have talked about it. That is the strange thing. They are not a couple who cannot talk. They have said the word boiler perhaps forty times since November, always practically, always about the arrangements, never once about the figure.
And neither of them has said it to anybody outside the house. Not to family. Not to the two friends who would want to know. Because it is not a crisis, exactly. Nobody is cold in any way that would show. It is simply five months of a temporary arrangement that has quietly become how they live.
That is you, and it is April.

Nothing on this page costs anything
Before anything else, because this is the subject where people are most often sold something.
Nobody here is going to tell you that a gift releases a supply, or that there is a sum to send somewhere that changes a quote, or that what you give determines what arrives. There is no toll booth in front of any of this and there never will be. Scripture nowhere puts a price on receiving from God, Isaiah 55:1, and the Holy Spirit does not work a turnstile.
And there is no advice here. Not about the boiler, not about the scheme, not about what you might have done in December. You have looked at this from more angles than anybody reading over your shoulder ever will.
The verse people quote half of
There is a sentence at the end of Philippians that has been printed on more mugs than almost any other, and it is nearly always quoted without the sentence in front of it.
I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.Philippians 4:12-13
The famous half is the last line. The half that makes it true is the one above it.
Paul is not saying he can achieve anything. He is saying he has been through both, full and hungry, abounding and short, and that he has been carried in both, and therefore he can do all things through the One who strengthens him. The all things being referred to is the being hungry as much as the being full.
Which is a very different sentence from the one on the mug. It is not a promise that the shortage ends. It is a statement that a person can be held inside it.
And notice the word instructed. He says he learned it. It was not a temperament he was born with and it did not arrive in one go. It came out of exactly the kind of stretch you are five months into.
You are being carried in this, not merely waiting for it to end. Scripture says I know how to be abased and I know how to abound, Philippians 4:12, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the strengthening rather than leaving it to a household's own stamina.
What five months has quietly done
Here is the part that has cost you more than the cold, and neither of you has named it.
The arrangement works. That is the trouble. If it were failing you would have had to act. Because it works, it has been allowed to keep running, and somewhere around February it stopped being a problem you are solving and became simply how this house is. Scripture holds that ground in Philippians 4:12-13, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.
And with it went a set of small things nobody decided. You stopped having people round, because of the upstairs. You stopped mentioning it, because after month three the mentioning felt like complaining about something old. The children stopped asking, which you took as resilience and which may also be that they have concluded there is no point.
The boiler is a broken appliance. Five months of adapting around it is something else, and the second one is the thing that needs attention.
You have not been asked to absorb this indefinitely on your own. Scripture says bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ, Galatians 6:2, and it does not add a clause excluding households who are coping, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a plain sentence out of a couple who have not been in any actual danger and have therefore said nothing for five months.
Say the figure, twice
Two halves, both small.
The first is God, and you have skipped it. You have prayed about the winter in general, probably. You have not said the number. This rests on Scripture in Philippians 4:12-13, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.
Say it. Not because He needs the information and not because a particular wording releases anything, because it does not, and anybody offering you a form of words is selling you a technique instead of a Father. Say it because a specific true thing said out loud is what talking to somebody is, and five months of the general is how a subject drifts out of a conversation without anybody ending it.
You are welcome here with the exact figure. Scripture says be careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplication let your requests be made known unto God, Philippians 4:6, and every thing is the widest word in that sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a person past the feeling that this is too domestic to raise.
The second is one other household. Not a request and not an appeal. One sentence: our boiler went in November and we have been heating one room since.
You already know how you would respond if a friend said that to you in April. You would be appalled, not at them, and you would want to have known in December.
The thing that can change this week is not the boiler. I do not know what happens with the boiler and nobody who tells you they do is telling you the truth.
What can change is that this stops being a thing your household holds by itself.
You have been treating the fact that you are coping as a reason not to speak. Turn that over and look at it: coping has become the qualification for silence. Which means the better you manage, the more alone you get, and five months in that is exactly where you have arrived. Scripture already said it in Philippians 4:12-13, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.
Coping is not a reason to say nothing. It is just what you have been doing while saying nothing.
You are held in this, and the arrangement is not the shape of your family. Scripture says I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me, and it says it about being hungry as much as about being full, Philippians 4:12-13, and the Holy Spirit has been in that front room at four o'clock on every one of these afternoons.
So take the quote out of the insurance folder tonight and put it back on the table. Say the figure out loud to God, in your own kitchen, in plain numbers. Then say the sentence to one other household this week.
And put the heater where you want it, not where it has ended up.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, both of you if you can, with your hands on the page. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given and no winter withdraws it. Scripture carries every line here and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. There is no deadline being set for God in any of this; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a report on what kind of household this is.
- One heated room since November, you are an arrangement and not the shape of this family. The Word of God says I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, and it says it about being short as much as about being full, and in the name of Jesus I stop calling five months normal.
- Rule that says coping is a reason to say nothing, get out of this house. Scripture says bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ, Galatians 6:2, and the Holy Spirit has never once made managing well the qualification for being left alone with it.
- Father, You have been in this front room at four o'clock on every afternoon since November, and You knew the figure before the man came out. We are saying the number out loud tonight, and we are telling one other house this week, and we are not carrying this on our own any longer.
