The Date on the Letter

This message is for the arrears that have gone as far as a court date, and the fact that you sit in a building every Sunday with people who love you and not one of them knows

It is in the bag she takes to work, in the zip pocket, because she does not want it in the house where anybody might tidy it.

A Tuesday. Three weeks away. There is a reference number and a paragraph about what will happen if she does not attend and a paragraph about what she can do before then, and she has read all of it about six times and she knows exactly what it says.

It did not arrive out of nowhere. There was a bad eighteen months, and then there was a stretch where it was nearly recoverable, and then a thing happened that was not her fault and after that it stopped being nearly anything.

Here is what makes this particular Tuesday so heavy.

On Sunday she will be in a building with about ninety people, and she will make the tea, and she will ask a woman about her hip and remember the answer, and somebody will say she is a blessing. And not one person in that room will know there is a court date in a zip pocket in a bag on a hook in the hall.

She is not deceiving anybody. That is what she would tell you and she would be right. Nobody has asked. There is no moment in a Sunday morning where a person announces something like this, and every week that goes past makes the not-having-said-it harder rather than easier.

That is you, and three weeks is not long.

The Date on the Letter

Three things straight away

The first. Nothing on this page costs anything.

Nobody here is going to tell you that a gift releases a supply, or that there is a sum you can send that changes a date, or that what you give determines what arrives. There is no toll booth in front of any of this and there never will be. Scripture nowhere puts a price on receiving from God, Isaiah 55:1, and the Holy Spirit does not work a turnstile.

The second. There is no financial advice here and no legal advice. Not one word about the arrears, the paperwork, or what you should have done in the bad eighteen months.

The third, and it is the practical one that actually matters. That letter almost certainly names people who help with exactly this, free, and there are organizations whose entire job is standing beside somebody at a hearing like that. Using them is not a failure of faith and it is not a lack of trust. It is a person using what is in front of them, and Scripture has no category anywhere in which practical help competes with God.

You are not on your own with this by God's design. Scripture says cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee, Psalm 55:22, and the sustaining is on His side of the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that into a hallway where a bag is hanging on a hook.

The psalm was written by somebody hiding something

There is a line in Psalm 55 that people quote as a general comfort, and the psalm around it is much more specific than that.

Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.Psalm 55:22

Read what surrounds it. Earlier in the psalm David says his heart is sore pained within him, that fearfulness and trembling are come upon him, and that he wishes he had wings like a dove so he could fly away and be at rest. He says, in verse eight, that he would hasten his escape from the windy storm.

That is not a man writing about a mild worry. That is somebody who wants to leave the building.

And into that, the instruction is not solve it and not explain it. It is cast, which is a throwing word, and it assumes a thing heavy enough that it has to be thrown rather than handed over politely.

You are carrying something that Scripture assumes has weight. Scripture says cast thy burden upon the Lord, Psalm 55:22, and it does not ask for the burden to be tidy or explicable first, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes weight rather than requiring somebody to put it down neatly.

What the silence is actually doing

Now the thing that has cost you more than the arrears have, and it is not the money.

You are living two Sundays. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in Psalm 55:22, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.

There is the one everybody sees, which is real: the tea, the woman's hip, the genuine warmth, none of which is a performance. And there is the one in the zip pocket, and the gap between them has been widening for months, and holding both at once takes an amount of energy that nobody in that hall could estimate.

And here is the cruel part of the arrangement. The better you are at the first Sunday, the more impossible the second becomes to mention, because a woman everybody calls a blessing cannot easily say the sentence, and every warm word you receive makes the pocket heavier. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in Psalm 55:22, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.

That is not deception. It is a trap with a very kind face on it.

You are not required to be the version they see in order to be loved in that room. Scripture says the Lord looketh on the heart, 1 Samuel 16:7, and the Holy Spirit has never once graded a woman by whether her circumstances match her reputation.

Say it twice

Two halves, both small, and the second one is the hard one.

The first is God, and I suspect you have gone general with Him, because you have been general with everybody. You have prayed about the situation. You have probably not said the figure or the date out loud. Scripture holds that ground in Psalm 55:22, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.

Say both. Not because a particular wording unlocks something, because it does not, and anybody selling you a form of words is selling a technique in place of a Father. Say it because a specific true thing said out loud is what talking to somebody is, and because months of the general is how a subject drifts out of a conversation without anybody ending it.

You are welcome here with the exact figure and the exact date. Scripture says be careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplication let your requests be made known unto God, Philippians 4:6, and every thing is the widest word in the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a person past the shame far enough to say a number in her own kitchen.

The second is one person from that building. Not the room, and not from the front, and not as a request for money, which is not what you need and not what this is about.

One sentence: I have a court date in three weeks about arrears and nobody here knows.

Choose the person who will not flinch, will not lecture, and will not make it their project. You already know which one that is. You have probably known for months. This rests on Scripture in Psalm 55:22, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.

The breakthrough

The Tuesday is coming and I do not know what happens on it, and anybody who tells you they do is not telling you the truth.

What can change this week is that you stop being the only person who knows.

You have been treating your own capability as the reason for silence: because you are managing, because you are the one who asks about other people's hips, because there is no natural moment. But capability was never the qualification for being left alone with something, and the whole New Testament assumes that people in a room like that one carry things for each other. Scripture already said it in Psalm 55:22, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.

And there is a second thing to put down, and it is the heavier one. Somewhere in the last few months the arrears stopped being a fact about a hard eighteen months and became a fact about you. That transfer happened quietly and it is not true, and there is no verse anywhere that reads a debt as a report on a person's worth.

You are seen, and this is known, and it was known before the letter. Scripture says cast thy burden upon the Lord and he shall sustain thee, Psalm 55:22, and the Holy Spirit has been in that hallway with a bag on a hook every day since it arrived.

So say the figure and the date out loud to God tonight. Ring the free advice line named on that letter this week. And on Sunday, say one sentence to the one person you already have in mind.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with your hand on the page. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given to you and no letter withdraws it. Scripture carries every line here and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. Nothing here sets God a date; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a verdict on you.

  1. Date printed on that letter, you are a Tuesday in a diary and you are not a ruling on who I am. The Word of God says cast thy burden upon the Lord and He shall sustain thee, and in the name of Jesus I throw this where it was always meant to go.
  2. Transfer that happened quietly in the last few months, where a hard eighteen months became a fact about me, get out of this house. Scripture says the Lord looks on the heart, 1 Samuel 16:7, and the Holy Spirit has never once read a woman's worth off an amount owed.
  3. Lord, You have been in this hallway with a bag on a hook every day since it came, and You knew the figure before I did. I am saying it out loud to You tonight, I am ringing the number on that letter, and on Sunday I am telling the one person I already have in mind.
