Fifty-Eight, and Still Hearing Him

He finished the gate on a Saturday and it is a good gate, and he stood back and looked at it and heard, in his own head, in his father's exact voice, that it would do.

That is the whole of it. Not a criticism. It will do. Said the way his father said it, with the small pause before, which meant that it was adequate and that the conversation was over.

His father has been dead eleven years.

He is fifty-eight. He has built a business, raised three, buried a wife's mother, been the man everybody rings. And when he does a thing well, the first voice that arrives in the room is not his own and never has been, and it does not congratulate him, it assesses him, and it does it in about a second and a half.

He would tell you his father was not a cruel man. That is true. There was no violence and there were no terrible scenes. There was simply a man who never once said a thing was good, because saying so was not done, and a boy who spent about forty years waiting for a sentence that was never going to be constructed.

He has never said this out loud to anybody. He would find it embarrassing. There are men his age with real histories, and his was ordinary, and it feels ridiculous to be fifty-eight and still be listening for an approval that stopped being available in a hospital eleven years ago.

That is you, and it is not ridiculous.

Nothing here is against your father

Let me say that early, because you will be braced for it.

I am not going to take him apart. He is not here to answer and you would not want it, and a man who was not cruel and did not praise is a very ordinary product of a particular generation and a particular place, and half the men his age were exactly the same.

He probably thought he was doing it right. He may well have been proud of you and considered it obvious enough not to need saying, which is its own kind of tragedy and is a great deal more common than cruelty.

So this is not an indictment. It is simply an observation, and it is this: whatever he intended, the voice he installed is still running, and it got there before yours on Saturday, and it will get there again next time.

You are not being disloyal by naming that. Scripture says honor thy father and thy mother, Exodus 20:12, and honoring a man is entirely compatible with noticing what his silence built, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody look at it clearly without it turning into an accusation.

The verse hands you a name, not a rank

There is a passage in Galatians that does something very specific and it is worth going slowly.

And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.Galatians 4:6-7

Read the order. Because ye are sons, God sent the Spirit. Not: strive and you may be adopted. The sonship comes first and the sending is a consequence of it.

And then the second half, which is the part for you. No more a servant, but a son.

Those are two entirely different relationships. A servant is assessed. A servant's standing goes up and down with the quality of the work, and a servant waits, at the end of a job, to be told whether it will do. That is exactly the relationship you have been in with your own achievements since you were a boy, and it is the one you carried upward without ever checking it. Scripture already said it in Galatians 4:6-7, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.

A son is not assessed. A son is a son on his worst Saturday.

You are not a servant waiting on a verdict. Scripture says thou art no more a servant, but a son, Galatians 4:7, and the Holy Spirit is named in the verse right before it as the one who does the crying out in a person, which means the assurance is not something you have to manufacture at fifty-eight.

The word Paul leaves untranslated

There is one more detail in that passage and it is the kindest thing in it.

The Spirit cries Abba, Father. Paul is writing in Greek to a Greek-speaking readership and he leaves Abba in the original, untranslated, because it is the word a child actually used at home. It is not the formal word. It is the domestic one, the one used across a kitchen.

And Paul puts that word in the mouth of the Spirit inside a person, which means the language God has installed in you is the language of a house rather than the language of an inspection.

You have not been given a foreman. Scripture says the Spirit crying, Abba, Father, Galatians 4:6, and it is the domestic word rather than the formal one, and the Holy Spirit is the one making that sound inside a man who has been listening for an assessment for fifty years.

What the voice is actually costing

Here is what it has taken, and it is not confidence, because you have plenty of that and everybody in that town would tell you so. None of that is mine to declare on my own. Scripture said it first in Galatians 4:6-7, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings it the distance.

It has taken the moment after.

Everything you have ever built has had about a second and a half of your own reaction available before the assessment arrived, and you have never once been allowed to simply stand in front of something you made and be glad about it. That second and a half, multiplied across forty years of gates and jobs and children, is an enormous amount of ordinary human satisfaction that you have never been permitted to have. Scripture put that in writing long before you read it here, in Galatians 4:6-7, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes written words land.

And it is not modesty. Modesty is a decision. This is a voice that arrives before any decision is made.

You are allowed to be glad about your own work. Scripture says let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another, Galatians 6:4, and it puts the rejoicing in the man's own hands rather than in somebody else's verdict, and the Holy Spirit is not the one running the assessment that beats you to it.
