The Guest Who Lives Here

He is always slightly nearer the door than anybody else, and he could not tell you when that started.

Coat over the arm rather than on the hook, even in February. Standing at the end of the row rather than in the middle of it. First to offer to help stack the chairs, which everybody reads as willingness and which is also, if you look at it closely, a job that lets a man be useful without having to be sat down anywhere.

Six years. He came to all of this at forty-one, in a bad year, through a conversation in a car park that he still cannot describe without stopping halfway through.

He knows the songs now. He knows where things are kept. Somebody rings him when they need a lift. And when a person he does not know asks him how long he has been coming, he hears himself say oh, not that long, and it is not a lie exactly, but it is not six years either, and he has never worked out why his mouth does that.

Last month somebody handed him a key.

He said yes and thanked them, and he has used it twice, and it is on a separate ring from his own keys, in the inside pocket, not on the fob with the house and the car.

That is you, and you have never once said out loud that you feel like a guest.

Nobody made you a visitor

Let me start where the trouble actually is, because it is not where you think.

Nobody in that room has treated you as a guest. If anything the opposite: you have been given a key, you get rung for lifts, and the people who have known you longest would be genuinely upset to hear the word. You know all of that, and it has not moved the feeling one inch, and that is exactly the point. Scripture holds that ground in Ephesians 2:19, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.

The arrangement is not being enforced on you from outside. It is being maintained by you, from the inside, and it has been running so long that you take it for a fact about the room rather than a habit of your own.

And here is where it comes from, and it is not complicated. You arrived late. Everybody else in there seems to have arrived early, or been born into it, or at least to have a vocabulary that came from somewhere other than the last six years. So you filed yourself under newer, which was accurate at the time, and newer has quietly become less, and less has become a coat over an arm in February.

None of that came from God. Scripture goes out of its way to demolish exactly that arrangement, and it does it in a single sentence that we will get to in a moment, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence like that off a page and puts it into a man standing at the end of a row.

The word Paul reaches for

There is a line in Ephesians that was written to people in precisely your position, and it does one thing that most people read past.

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God.Ephesians 2:19

Look at who is being addressed. Paul is writing to people who came in late and from outside, who had none of the history, none of the vocabulary, and no claim by birth on any of it. He is not writing to the ones who had always been there. He is writing to the ones who had every reason to stand near the door.

And notice what he does not say. He does not say they are welcome. He does not say they are accepted, or included, or made room for, all of which are guest words and all of which leave the ownership of the room with somebody else.

He says fellowcitizens, and then he goes further and says of the household. Not a visitor in the house. Of it.

A citizen does not get thanked for coming. A member of a household does not carry a coat over an arm in case the evening ends early.

You are not a visitor who has been made very welcome. Scripture says ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but of the household of God, Ephesians 2:19, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries that the whole distance from a page to a man with a key in his inside pocket.

Six years is not the measurement

Here is the piece that has been quietly wrong in your arithmetic.

You have been measuring belonging in time served. Six years against thirty. Songs known against songs known since childhood. A vocabulary picked up in adulthood against one absorbed before anybody could read. This rests on Scripture in Ephesians 2:19, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.

But the room was never entered on those terms by anybody in it, including the ones who have been there since they were small.

Read the two verses before the one above and you can see Paul doing the demolition on purpose. He says both groups have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Both. The ones with all the history and the ones with none of it arrive through the same door, and the door is not seniority and it is not familiarity and it is not the number of years on a person's attendance.

Which means the thirty year man at the front and the six year man at the end of the row got in the same way, and neither of them earned it, and the difference you have been feeling is a difference in comfort, not in standing.

You are not further from God than the people who have been here longer. Scripture says through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father, Ephesians 2:18, and the Holy Spirit named in that verse is the same one who brought you in through a conversation in a car park at forty-one.

And you do not have to catch up

There is a second thing running underneath the first, and it is smaller and sharper.

You have been quietly planning to belong later. Once you have read more. Once you stop having to look things up entirely. Once you can talk about it without the sense that somebody might ask a follow-up question you cannot answer. Scripture already said it in Ephesians 2:19, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.

That day is not coming, and not because you are slow. It is not coming because it does not exist. There is no threshold of knowledge on the far side of which a person stops feeling new, and the people you assume have crossed it have not crossed it either; they have simply stopped noticing the room. None of that is mine to declare on my own. Scripture said it first in Ephesians 2:19, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings it the distance.

Belonging was never on a syllabus.

You are not waiting to qualify for something you already have. Scripture says as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, John 1:12, and it puts the whole of it on receiving and none of it on catching up, and the Holy Spirit is not administering an entrance exam six years after the fact.
