Identity in ChristMicah 7:19

The Thing I Have Never Told Anybody

This message is for the one thing in your history that nobody knows, and the private assumption that God keeps a separate file with it in

She has been going for eleven years and she has never once been to the thing where people share.

It is a good church and she is properly part of it. She helps. She is on the flowers rota and she brings a thing to the meal in December and there are perhaps twenty people there who would say they know her.

And there is one specific evening in her early twenties, and what she did, and she has never told a living soul.

Not the friend she has known since school. Not her husband, who knows a general shape and not the particulars. Not anybody at that church, obviously, and not the woman who leads the group who is kind and who she likes and who would probably be exactly the right person, which is precisely why she has never once gone.

She believes she is forgiven. She would say so and she is not lying. It is settled in the part of her that handles doctrine and it has been for years.

What is not settled is what she assumes God does with it now. Because underneath the forgiveness, without ever having been examined, is a picture: a file, kept somewhere, with that in it, and the sense that when God looks at her the file is what is open on the desk.

That is why she gives more than she needs to. That is why she cannot receive a compliment about her character without something in her chest going tight. And that is why, eleven years in, she is on the flowers rota and has never sat in a circle.

That is you, and the file does not exist.

The Thing I Have Never Told Anybody

Nothing here asks you to disclose

Let me say that first and mean it.

There is a kind of Christian writing that treats confession as a lever: tell somebody and the shame breaks. Sometimes that is true and sometimes it is a way of putting a person under obligation, and I am not going to do it to you. You do not owe your history to a group, a leader, a page, or anybody at all.

If a day comes when you want one person to know, that will be your decision and it will be a good one. It is not the point of this article and it is not the condition of anything here.

What this page is about is not what people know. It is what you think God is doing with what He already knows.

You are not hiding from God, which means the problem is not disclosure. Scripture says thou hast searched me, and known me, Psalm 139:1, and it says it as comfort rather than as threat, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes being fully known feel like being loved rather than like being caught.

What He does with it

There is a line at the end of Micah with an image so physical that people usually read past it.

He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.Micah 7:19

Cast. A throwing word, and a deliberate one.

Into the depths of the sea. Not filed. Not sealed. Not archived somewhere retrievable with the right authorization. Into the one place in the ancient world that was understood to be genuinely unreachable, from which nothing came back and into which nobody could follow.

Read what that means about the file you have assumed exists. It is not that God has it and has kindly agreed not to mention it. It is that He has disposed of it, on purpose, with an action, in a place chosen precisely because nothing can be got out of it. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in Micah 7:19, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.

And look at the verb before it: he will subdue our iniquities. Subdue is a word about power. He does not merely forgive the thing; He takes its strength off it.

You are not being looked at through a file. Scripture says thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea, Micah 7:19, and the casting was His action and not your achievement, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land in somebody who has believed the doctrine for years without it reaching the chest.

Believing it and living it are two different places

Here is the thing to name, because it is the whole shape of your last eleven years.

You believe you are forgiven. That belief lives in your head and it is genuine and it would survive any test anybody set it. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in Micah 7:19, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.

And your behavior is being run by something else entirely: by the file. By the assumption that there is a version of you on record, and that everything you do in that building is, at some level, being weighed against it.

That is why the giving is slightly more than it needs to be. That is why a compliment about your character cannot land. It is not modesty; it is that praise aimed at a person who believes there is a file feels like praise aimed at somebody the speaker has not properly met.

Two things can be true at once: the doctrine settled, the life still running on the old arrangement. That is not hypocrisy. It is extremely common and almost nobody names it.

You are not two people. Scripture says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, Romans 8:1, and now is the word in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a settled fact from the head into the way somebody actually lives.

Where the picture came from

The file is not a Christian idea. It is worth knowing that, because you probably assume you got it from church.

You got it from being human. Every human system runs on records: schools, employers, courts, families. Everywhere you have ever been, something you did has been kept and can be produced. That is simply how people organize themselves, and it is not wicked, it is administrative. Scripture holds that ground in Micah 7:19, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.

And then you did what everybody does, which is to assume God runs on the same principle, only more thoroughly.

Micah 7 is God specifically telling you He does not.

You are not dealing with a better record-keeper. Scripture says as far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us, Psalm 103:12, and that is a distance chosen because it does not terminate, and the Holy Spirit is not maintaining an archive He has already thrown into the sea.

The breakthrough

Nobody is going to tell you to tell anybody, and I meant that.

What changes today is the picture.

You have been living in front of a desk with a file open on it, and the file is not there. That is not encouragement and it is not positive thinking; it is a statement about what God says He has done, in a verb, in a specific place, chosen for the specific reason that nothing comes back out of it. This rests on Scripture in Micah 7:19, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.

So the giving can come down to what you actually want to give. And the next time somebody says something kind about your character, you can let it land, because they are not describing somebody they have not met. They are describing the woman God is looking at, and there is not a second version of you being consulted.

You are not being read from a record. Scripture says thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea, Micah 7:19, and the Holy Spirit has been treating you as the woman in that verse for eleven years while you carried a file He had already disposed of.

So write your name down tonight, and read it out loud, and let it be the whole of your name rather than a name with a footnote.

And go to the thing where people share, if and when you want to, for the reason anybody goes, which is that it is good to be in a room with people. Not to confess. Just to sit down.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with your hand on the paper. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that standing was given rather than earned, and no evening in your early twenties has any authority to revise it. Scripture carries every line here and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. Nothing in this demands anything of God; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, what He did with it was finished long before you formed a picture of it.

  1. File I have assumed God keeps, you do not exist, and I have been living as though you did. The Word of God says He casts all their sins into the depths of the sea, and in the name of Jesus I stop standing in front of a desk with nothing on it.
  2. Habit of giving slightly more than I need to and never letting a kind word land, get out of this house. Scripture says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, Romans 8:1, and the Holy Spirit has never once introduced me to God by my worst evening.
  3. Father, You subdued it and then You threw it where nothing comes back from, and You chose that place on purpose. I am writing my name down and reading it out loud with no footnote, and I am living in front of the desk You actually keep.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
