What the Town Called Me at Nineteen

It took about six weeks for the word to attach, and then it stayed for twenty years.

He was nineteen. He did one thing. It was genuinely his fault and he has never once claimed otherwise, and there were consequences and he took them, and by any reasonable measure the matter was concluded a very long time ago.

The town did not conclude it.

It is a small place. Everybody knows the story and everybody knows it in the version that got told rather than the version that happened, and the two are not the same but the difference is not the sort of thing that can be corrected in a shop doorway.

So he has lived inside a word.

Here is what that actually looks like, day to day, and it is not dramatic.

He does not go into two pubs. He gets his shopping in the next town over on a Saturday, which adds twenty minutes and which he has never described to himself as avoidance. When somebody new moves in he waits, with a particular kind of quiet, for the moment they find out, and he can always tell when it has happened because of a small change in how they say hello.

He has been good for twenty years. He has raised two children and he has helped half the street with one thing or another and he has never once put a foot wrong since.

None of it has moved the word. That is the thing he has learned and stopped fighting: reputation is not earned back by conduct, in a small town, once it has hardened.

And the worst part, the part he has never said out loud, is that after twenty years he has stopped disagreeing with it.

That is you, and that word was never your name.

Three things at the start

I am not going to tell you it was not your fault. You have said it was, and I am going to take you at your word, and treating you as somebody who needs to be excused would be its own kind of insult. Scripture stands under that in Revelation 2:17, and the Holy Spirit does the part no sentence can do.

I am not going to tell you the town is wicked. Small places carry stories because stories are how small places remember, and most of the people repeating it have not thought about it in years and mean you no harm at all.

And I am not going to tell you to leave. That is a real decision with real costs and it belongs to you and the people who know your circumstances.

What I am going to do is deal with the actual problem, which is not the town's opinion. It is that after twenty years you have started agreeing with it.

You are not the thing you did at nineteen. Scripture says if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new, 2 Corinthians 5:17, and it is written about the man rather than about his reputation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true inside somebody long before a town notices.

The verse where the name is given privately

There is a promise at the end of one of the letters in Revelation, and it is small and strange and it is for exactly your situation.

To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.Revelation 2:17

Three things in it, and take them one at a time.

A new name. Not a cleaned up version of the old one. A different one, given rather than earned.

Written in a stone. Stone is a permanence word. A word from a town is written in conversation, which is why it spreads and why it cannot be corrected. This one is written in something that does not revise itself.

And then the last clause, which is the one for you: which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

Nobody else gets a copy. It is not issued to the town. It is not a public rehabilitation and it does not require anybody in that shop doorway to change their mind about anything.

It is a name given privately, by God, to the person it belongs to.

You have been waiting twenty years for a public verdict to be overturned. God's answer is not an appeal. It is a private naming that does not depend on their agreement at all.

You are not waiting on a town to be renamed. Scripture says a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it, Revelation 2:17, and the not-knowing of everybody else is part of the promise rather than a limitation on it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who delivers a name that no conversation in that town can reach.

When you started agreeing

This is the part that matters most and it is the hardest to see from inside.

For the first few years you disagreed. There was an internal argument running: they have the wrong version, I am not that, this is unfair.

Somewhere around year eight or nine the argument went quiet. Not because you were convinced. Because arguing with something that never responds is exhausting, and at some point every person in your position stops. It is written, in Revelation 2:17, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written off a page and into a life.

And what fills the space is not peace, it is agreement. You began to organize your life around the word as though it were accurate. The two pubs. The next town on a Saturday. The waiting for the change in how somebody says hello.

That is a man living inside a description he has stopped contesting.

And it has one further cost, which is that it has quietly stopped you from doing things: from putting yourself forward, from taking a role, from being fully present in a place where you have actually been decent for two decades.

You are not obliged to live inside somebody else's account of you. Scripture says therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature, 2 Corinthians 5:17, and the newness is dated from Christ rather than from the town's willingness to update, and the Holy Spirit has never once addressed you by that word.

The twenty years are not nothing

Let me put something on the other side of the scale, because you have been leaving it off. Scripture settles that in Revelation 2:17, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.

You have been good for twenty years. Two children raised. Half a street helped. Not one foot wrong. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in Revelation 2:17, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.

You have been treating that as failed evidence, because it did not move the word. It was never evidence. It was a life. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in Revelation 2:17, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.

And here is what matters about it. The town's word describes six weeks when you were nineteen. Your life describes twenty years. Any honest observer with both sets of facts would find the second far more informative about who a man is, and God has both sets, and He has never once weighed them the way that shop doorway does.

You are not being assessed by the version that got told. Scripture says the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart, 1 Samuel 16:7, and the outward appearance in a small town is precisely a reputation, and the Holy Spirit has been reading the twenty years the whole time.
