The Fourth Time Back

The fourth time was a Sunday and it took about eleven minutes on the phone.

She had held out for nine weeks. Nine weeks is the longest it has ever been and she had begun, cautiously, to think of herself as somebody who had done it.

Then a Sunday afternoon, and a particular kind of quiet in the flat, and the phone.

He was not aggressive on the call. He was warm, and he was funny in the way he can be, and he said the thing he says, which is that he has been thinking about how it was at the start.

And something in her chest opened like a door.

By Tuesday he was back.

Here is what she has never told anybody, and it is not about him at all.

Her friend has stopped asking. Not out of unkindness; out of tiredness, because there are only so many times a person can be told the whole thing and then watch it restart. Her sister said something at Christmas that she has not been able to stop hearing.

And underneath both of those, quieter, the sentence she has arrived at herself: this is who I am. Four times. There is something in me that does this.

She does not say it as an excuse. She says it as a diagnosis, and she has stopped disagreeing with it, and that is the most dangerous thing in this entire account.

That is you, and four times is a pattern with a cause, and it is not a description of what you are.

First, and this is not a formality

If he has ever hurt you, frightened you, threatened you, controlled your money, your phone, or where you go, or made you afraid of what leaving would cost, then this is not a relationship pattern article, it is a safety situation, and the order of things changes.

In the UK the National Domestic Abuse Helpline is 0808 2000 247, free, and it runs around the clock. Wherever you are, there is a line like it. If you are in immediate danger, ring the emergency services. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in Galatians 5:1, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.

Leaving is the most dangerous point in that kind of relationship, which is why safety planning exists and why the people on those lines do it every day. Do not do it alone on a Sunday because an article told you to.

And nothing on this page is a judgement on you for staying, for going back, or for anything at all. That is not what this is.

You are not being weighed for how quickly you get out of anything. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit, Psalm 34:18, and nearness is not conditional on a decision being made yet, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in that flat on the Sunday, in the quiet, before the phone rings.

The verse is about a standing, not an effort

There is a line at the start of Galatians 5 that people usually apply to something abstract, and it is worth reading as a woman on a Sunday afternoon.

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.Galatians 5:1

Notice the order.

The freeing has already happened. Wherewith Christ hath made us free, past tense, done, by Him. The standing comes after it and is described as standing in something that already exists rather than as producing it.

That matters enormously for you, because you have been trying to generate freedom by force of will on nine week stretches, and then reading the return as proof that you do not have any. Scripture holds that ground in Galatians 5:1, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.

The freedom is not the thing you are failing to make. It is the ground you are standing on, and it did not go anywhere on Tuesday. This rests on Scripture in Galatians 5:1, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.

And look at the word entangled. It is a word for something you get caught in rather than something you choose, which is a more accurate description of what happened on that phone call than any word you have used about yourself.

You are not producing your own freedom. Scripture says stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, Galatians 5:1, and the making free is His completed action rather than your ongoing project, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a person standing rather than grading how long she manages it.

What the pull actually offers

Let me be exact about the eleven minutes, because you have never examined them and they are the mechanism. Scripture already said it in Galatians 5:1, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.

He did not offer you the relationship. He offered you the start of it.

That is what the sentence about how it was at the beginning does. It does not describe the last four years; it opens a door onto the first four months, and for the length of that phone call you are standing in the version of him that existed then. None of that is mine to declare on my own. Scripture said it first in Galatians 5:1, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings it the distance.

And here is the thing that makes it so powerful and so unfair: that version was real. You are not being deceived about the past. It happened, and it is why you are here, and it is why nobody who has not been in it can understand why you go back. Scripture put that in writing long before you read it here, in Galatians 5:1, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes written words land.

What is not real is the implication that it is available. But in the eleven minutes it feels available, because a memory and a promise use exactly the same part of a person.

So the pull is not weakness of character. It is a genuine memory being used as a lever, and it works on people with a great deal of strength.

You are not going back because there is something defective in you. Scripture says he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust, Psalm 103:14, and it is offered as the ground of God's tenderness rather than as an assessment of a failing, and the Holy Spirit is not the author of the diagnosis you have made about yourself.

The nine weeks were not a failure

Look at what you have actually done, because you have filed it entirely wrong. I have no authority to say that by myself. Scripture carries it in Galatians 5:1, and the Holy Spirit carries it to you.

You left. Four times. Each of those took a decision, and courage, and each one cost you something real, and the fourth one held for nine weeks, which is longer than any of the others.

You are reading a series of returns. What is actually on the record is a series of departures, and the trend in them is going the right way.

That is not me being nice about it. It is what the data says, and you have been reading only half of it. That is Scripture's sentence and not mine, Galatians 5:1, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who makes it true where you are.

People almost never leave a situation like this once. The research on it is consistent and unglamorous: most people go back several times before the last time, and the ones who eventually get out are simply the ones who kept leaving. The returns are part of the shape of it, not a disqualification from it.

You are not failing at this. Scripture says for a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again, Proverbs 24:16, and the man in that verse is called just while he is still falling, and the Holy Spirit has counted every one of the four times you got up rather than the four times you went back.
