It is always dark. That is the part that has started to bother her more than the food.
Not fully dark: there is the light over the hob, and there is the fridge when it opens, and there is a phone face down on the counter. But she does not put the main light on. She has never once put the main light on, and she has been doing this for about three years.
She is not starving. She had dinner. That is what makes it so difficult to explain to herself, because a hungry person eating is a story that makes sense and this is not that.
It is somewhere around midnight and something in her chest is doing something it does not do in the daytime, and the kitchen is where she goes.
Then the packaging.
She puts it at the bottom. Underneath other things, folded small, sometimes into a different bag entirely, and once, twice, out to the outside bin at half past midnight in a coat over pajamas.
Nobody is checking. Nobody in that house has ever gone through a bin in their life. She knows that and she does it anyway, and the doing it anyway is the part she cannot explain.
And then, about four minutes after the last mouthful, the other thing arrives.
Not regret. Contempt. A flat voice, entirely her own, saying something about her that she would never in a thousand years say to another human being.
That is you, and the voice at four minutes is not God.

Four things, and I mean all four
The first. If this has a purging side, or if you are restricting in the daytime and it is driving the night, that is an eating disorder and it has real treatment and real recovery rates. Go to a doctor this week. That is not a smaller road than this page. It is the road. It is written, in Psalm 103:13-14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written off a page and into a life.
The second. Nothing here is a diet, and I am not going to give you a food rule. You have had enough rules and they are part of what built the night. Scripture settles that in Psalm 103:13-14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.
The third. This is not greed and it is not a character defect. Late eating in the dark is almost never about appetite; it is a body reaching for the fastest available soothing at the hour when defenses are lowest, and that is a mechanism rather than a moral event.
The fourth. Nothing on this page is going to shame you. Shame is the fuel this thing runs on and adding to the tank has never once emptied it.
You are not held in contempt by God at ten past midnight. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, Psalm 34:18, and nigh is a location word rather than an approval rating, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is standing in that kitchen while the fridge door is open.
The verse is about what He knows we are made of
There is a pair of lines in Psalm 103 that most people have never heard, because the famous part is earlier.
Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.Psalm 103:13-14
He knoweth our frame. Frame is a construction word. It is what a thing is built out of, and God is described here as somebody who is fully aware of the material.
And then: he remembereth that we are dust. Not forgets it, in exasperation. Remembers it, deliberately, as the basis of how He deals with you.
Now put that beside the four minute voice. That voice speaks to you as though you were built out of something stronger and are simply refusing to use it. It treats you as a machine that is malfunctioning on purpose. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in Psalm 103:13-14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.
God does not. He is the one who knows exactly what you are made of, at midnight, when the day has taken everything, and He factors it in rather than holding it against you.
You are not being dealt with by somebody who has forgotten what you are. Scripture says he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust, Psalm 103:14, and it is offered as the reason for His pity rather than as an excuse for yours, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells the difference between conviction that lifts a person and contempt that flattens them.
The hiding is the thing I would move first
Not the eating. The bin.
Because the food, honestly, is a smaller problem than you think and a larger amount of it than you would like to admit is simply calories at a strange hour. The hiding is what has been growing.
Ask the question plainly. Who is it hidden from? Nobody looks. Nobody would say anything. The hiding is not a defense against another person at all.
It is a way of keeping the night out of your daytime self. Two versions of you: the one who lives in the light with the family, and the one at midnight, and the packaging at the bottom of the bin is the wall between them.
And that wall is expensive, because a secret has to be maintained, and maintaining it is exhausting, and exhaustion is one of the reliable ways a person ends up in a dark kitchen at midnight.
You are not two people, and nothing about you needs to be kept at the bottom of a bin. Scripture says if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, 1 John 1:7, and walking in the light there is about being known rather than about being flawless, and the Holy Spirit is not the one who taught you to fold a wrapper small.
The four minute voice
Let me be specific about the voice, because you have been treating it as though it were the reasonable one in the room. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in Psalm 103:13-14, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.
It arrives about four minutes after the last mouthful. It is your own voice, which is why it has authority. It says something about what you are, not about what you did, and it says it with a flatness that feels like realism. Scripture holds that ground in Psalm 103:13-14, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.
That is how you can tell it is not from God.
Conviction from God is specific, it is about an action, it is warm even when it is sharp, and it always comes with a way forward. It says: that is not good for you and here is the next step and I am here.
The four minute voice never gives you a next step. It gives you a verdict. And the verdict makes tomorrow night more likely, not less, because a person who believes they are a certain kind of person acts like that kind of person at midnight.
You are not being convicted at four minutes past. Scripture says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, Romans 8:1, and condemnation is a verdict word while conviction is a direction word, and the Holy Spirit has never once left a person with a verdict and no road.
I am not going to give you a food plan, and I am not asking you to promise anything about tonight.
Two things instead, and they are both smaller than they sound.
The first: put the main light on. If you go down there tonight, switch it on and leave it on and eat under it. It will feel appalling for about ninety seconds. It also ends, in one action, the thing that has been growing for three years, because you cannot be secretly doing something in a fully lit room.
The second: do not hide the packaging. Put it in the bin, on top, the ordinary way. That is the whole instruction.
You are not required to fix the eating this week. You are ending the hiding, and the eating is far more likely to loosen once it is not carrying a secret as well. This rests on Scripture in Psalm 103:13-14, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.
And when the four minute voice starts, say out loud that it is not conviction. Once. Out loud, in a lit kitchen.
You are known already, and there is nothing in that bin that has changed anything. Scripture says like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him, Psalm 103:13, and the Holy Spirit has been in every one of those midnights and has never spoken to you the way that voice does.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the lit room. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given to you and no midnight withdraws it. Scripture carries every line here and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. Nothing here sets God a date for anything; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a verdict on what you are.
- Four minutes of contempt that arrive after every one of these nights, you are not conviction and you have never once helped. The Word of God says He knoweth our frame and remembereth that we are dust, and in the name of Jesus I refuse a verdict that comes with no road out.
- Wall built out of folded packaging at the bottom of a bin, get out of this house. Scripture says if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, 1 John 1:7, and the Holy Spirit has never once required me to be two people to be loved by God.
- Lord, You know what I am built out of and You remember it on purpose, and You have been in this kitchen at midnight for three years. I am putting the light on and leaving it on, and the packaging is going in the bin the ordinary way.
