A phone goes off in another room and he is already standing.
Not startled, exactly. Ready. There is a difference and he knows it, and he has known it for about a year and a half without ever saying it to anybody.
Here is what the three years did.
The job, in the spring. Then his mother, four months later, which was not sudden but was still sudden. Then the thing with his brother that is not resolved and may not be. Then the letter about the house. Then the scan, which was fine in the end, and the six weeks of waiting for it, which were not.
Five things in three years, and none of them the largest thing that has ever happened to a human being, and all of them arriving before the last one had finished.
And his body learned something.
It learned that between bad things there is not a period of safety, there is a gap. And a gap is a place where you get ready.
So now there is no standing down. Good news arrives and he receives it with something held back. His wife said in the summer, not unkindly, that he had gone hard to reach, and he did not argue because she was right and he could not explain it.
He is not depressed and he is not falling apart. He is functioning extremely well, which is part of the problem, because nobody looks at a man who is functioning.
He is simply never off duty.
That is you, and the bracing is not irrational. It was taught to you by three years that kept confirming it.

What I am not going to say
I am not going to tell you the fear is irrational. It is not. You are not a man who has invented a threat; you are a man whose expectation has been correct five times in thirty six months, and a body that adjusts to that is a body doing its job well. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in Psalm 27:1, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.
I am not going to tell you to think positively. Somebody who has been proved right by events does not need optimism, and being told to expect the best by somebody who has not had your three years is insulting.
And if this is now bigger than vigilance, if you are not sleeping or you are drinking to stand down or the chest thing is happening in the day, then a doctor is the next step and it is a good one and it is not a smaller road than this page.
You are not weak, and you have not failed at faith. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit, Psalm 34:18, and nearness is not withheld from a man who is braced, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in the half second between a phone ringing and a man standing up.
The verse asks a question, and the question is the point
There is an opening line in Psalm 27 that most people read as a statement and that is actually built as an argument.
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?Psalm 27:1
Notice he does not say there is nothing to be afraid of. He was a soldier. He had a list. Later in the same psalm he mentions enemies, war, and the possibility of being forsaken by his own mother and father.
He does not deny the threats. He asks a different question: given who is with me, whom shall I fear?
That is not positive thinking. It is a reordering. The threats stay exactly where they are, and something is placed in front of them.
And look at the two names he uses. My light, which is what you need when you cannot see what is coming, which is your exact problem. And the strength of my life, which is what you need when you have been holding a brace for three years and are running out. That is not my opinion. Scripture stands behind it in Psalm 27:1, and the Holy Spirit brings it near.
He is not offering you a promise that nothing else will happen. He is offering you a companion in the gap, and the gap is where you actually live.
You are not standing in that gap alone. Scripture says the Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear, Psalm 27:1, and the question is asked by a man with a real list of enemies rather than by a man with nothing to fear, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in the gap between one thing and the next.
What the bracing costs
Let me be specific, because you have been treating this as free and it is not. Scripture holds that ground in Psalm 27:1, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries it into a room like this one.
Bracing is a physical state. Held shoulders, shallow breathing, a body that never fully sits down. Three years of it produces exactly what your wife described: a man who has gone hard to reach.
And that is the real cost. Not the tiredness. The unreachability.
Because to be reached, a person has to be receiving, and a man on duty is not receiving, he is scanning. So good news comes and something in you holds it at arm's length until it can be verified. Affection comes and lands on armor. Your wife has been talking to a sentry for eighteen months.
She did not say it unkindly. She said it because she is standing outside something and cannot find the way in.
You are not required to be on duty in your own house. Scripture says come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest, Matthew 11:28, and rest there is not sleep but a standing down, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man take something off in a room where nothing is currently happening.
The gap is not a waiting room
Here is the thing I would most like to change, and it is not your expectations about the future.
It is what you believe the present is for.
Right now, today, nothing bad is happening. That is a fact about today. And you are spending today as a preparation for a thing that is not here, which means the three years have not only taken five events from you, they are now taking the ordinary days as well. This rests on Scripture in Psalm 27:1, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.
That is how a hard season keeps charging you after it has ended.
I cannot tell you nothing else will happen. Something else will happen; that is life and you know it better than most. But the readiness you are holding will not change what arrives, and it is spending the days in between, and there are more of those than there are of the other kind.
You are not obliged to spend today on tomorrow. Scripture says sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, Matthew 6:34, and it is a boundary drawn around one day by somebody who was not naive about trouble, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that boundary hold for a man who has learned not to trust a quiet week.
I am not going to promise you a quiet year. Nobody can and you would not believe them.
What can change this week is that somebody is in the gap with you.
Tell your wife what she has been looking at. The plain version: I have been braced for three years and I do not know how to stand down, and that is what you have been running into. She has already noticed. What she does not have is the explanation, and without it she has been guessing, and her guess is worse than the truth. Scripture already said it in Psalm 27:1, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.
Then practice standing down in small units. Not a holiday and not a decision to relax. Ten minutes, sitting, shoulders dropped on purpose, hands open. Your body has forgotten what it feels like and it has to be shown rather than told.
And when good news comes, receive it. Say thank you out loud instead of holding it at arm's length pending confirmation. That is a discipline, not a feeling, and it can be started today.
You are not alone in the gap, and the light was offered by somebody who had a list of his own. Scripture says the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid, Psalm 27:1, and the Holy Spirit has been in every one of those three years, in the half second, standing up with you.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, sitting, with your hands open. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given to you and three hard years have not withdrawn it. Scripture carries every line here and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. Nothing here sets God a date and nothing here promises a quiet year; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a verdict on you.
- Brace I have been holding for three years, you were earned and you are not required of me any more. The Word of God says the Lord is my light and my salvation, and in the name of Jesus I stop spending today as preparation for a thing that is not here.
- Habit of holding good news at arm's length until it can be verified, get out of this house. Scripture says come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest, Matthew 11:28, and the Holy Spirit has never once needed me on duty in my own front room.
- Lord, David had a real list and still asked whom shall I fear, and You were the answer he put in front of all of it. I am telling my wife the plain version tonight, and I am dropping my shoulders for ten minutes at a time until my body remembers.
