It adds eleven minutes. He knows because he timed it once, early on, thinking that if it were only two or three he would stop thinking about it.
Eleven each way. Two years. He has done the arithmetic and then wished he had not.
The road itself is unremarkable. A stretch of about a mile and a half with a bend at the end of it and a garage on the left that has been shut for years.
He drove it four times a week for eleven years before.
Nobody in his family knows. That is the part that has become its own separate problem. His wife has commented twice that he goes the long way and he has said something about the lights, and both times she accepted it because why would she not.
If he is a passenger he is fine. If somebody else drives it he looks out of the window and his hands are still.
It is only him, driving, on that mile and a half.
He has tried three times. The third time was about eight months ago and he got as far as the turning and indicated and then did not take it, and sat at the junction for a moment with his heart going, and then drove the other way, and was quiet at dinner.
He is not a nervous man. He has done difficult things and everybody who knows him would say so, and that is exactly why this has become unbearable to him: it is not the road, it is what the road appears to say about him.
That is you, and what you have is an injury and not a weakness.

The first thing, and it is practical
What you are describing has a name and it has treatment, and the treatment is good. I have no authority to say that by myself. Scripture carries it in Psalm 23:4, and the Holy Spirit carries it to you.
Avoiding one specific place after something happened there is one of the most recognizable patterns there is, and it responds well, and there are therapies designed precisely for it that are often quite short. This is not a lifetime of talking about your childhood. It is a specific, well studied thing with a well studied route out.
Go to your doctor and say the plain sentence: there was a crash two years ago and I have not been able to drive that road since. That is the whole appointment. They will know exactly what you are describing. That is Scripture's sentence and not mine, Psalm 23:4, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who makes it true where you are.
That is not a lesser road than prayer, and nothing on this page competes with it. God is entirely at home in a consulting room and always has been.
You are not weak, and the avoiding is not a character flaw. Scripture says he healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds, Psalm 147:3, and binding a wound is what you do with an injury rather than with a failing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gets a man through the door of a surgery to say a sentence he has not said in two years.
The valley is walked through, not around
There is a line in Psalm 23 that everybody knows and hardly anybody reads carefully.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.Psalm 23:4
Two things in it, and they are both about you.
The first is the word through. Not around. The psalm does not describe a route that avoids the valley; it describes going into it and coming out the other side, and the whole comfort of the verse depends on that.
The second is why he fears no evil, and it is not what people assume. It is not because he is courageous. He gives the reason himself: for thou art with me. The absence of fear is attributed to a companion, not to a temperament.
That matters enormously for you, because for two years you have been reading this as a test of your own nerve, and you have been failing it privately every time you take the long way. Scripture stands under that in Psalm 23:4, and the Holy Spirit does the part no sentence can do.
It was never a test of nerve. The psalm has a shepherd in it, and a rod, and a staff, and a man who is being walked through something rather than being asked to be brave about it.
You are not being asked to do this on your own courage. Scripture says I will fear no evil: for thou art with me, Psalm 23:4, and the reason given is the companion rather than the character of the man walking, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is in the passenger seat on a road you have not taken in two years.
The secret is the heavier half
Eleven minutes each way is a real cost. The secret is a bigger one.
Because now there are two things: the road, and the concealment of the road. And the concealment has grown, quietly, into something that touches everything.
You have lied twice about the lights. Small, harmless, and now they sit there. You cannot mention the crash easily any more because mentioning it might lead to it. You have become slightly careful in your own car with your own wife. It is written, in Psalm 23:4, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written off a page and into a life.
That is what a kept thing does. It does not stay where it is put.
And there is something else. Your wife has noticed you take the long way. She has an explanation for it, and because she does not have the true one she has built her own, and I promise you that whatever she has built is not kinder than the truth.
You are not required to hold this on your own. Scripture says bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ, Galatians 6:2, and it takes two people for that law to be kept and one of them has to be willing to be the one carried, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a man able to say a hard sentence in an ordinary voice.
What actually happened at that junction
Eight months ago you indicated and did not take it, and you have filed that as a failure. Scripture settles that in Psalm 23:4, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.
It was not. Look at it again.
A man who was avoiding a road drove to it, deliberately, indicated, and sat at the junction with his heart going. That is not somebody failing. That is somebody who went as far as he could go on that particular day and then went home.
The reason it did not work is not that you lack resolve. It is that this kind of thing very rarely yields to one big attempt, and almost always yields to graded steps with somebody who knows what they are doing: the junction, then the first hundred yards, then a stretch, then the bend, with a passenger, then alone.
You did the first step of a treatment eight months early and without support, and then judged yourself for it.
You are not failing at this. Scripture says a bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench, Isaiah 42:3, and God is described there as handling gently the thing that is nearly out rather than demanding it perform, and the Holy Spirit is not standing at that junction keeping score.
I am not going to ask you to drive that road, and I would be doing you harm if I did.
Two things instead.
Tell your wife. Tonight, in the ordinary voice you would use for anything else: since the crash I have not been able to drive that stretch, and I have been going the long way for two years. That ends the concealment, which is the half that has been growing. She will not think less of you. She will be relieved to have an answer that is smaller than the one she had made up.
Then make the appointment. Say the same sentence to a doctor and let them tell you what exists. It is likely to be shorter and more practical than you imagine.
The road itself comes later, in steps, with support, and it may take months, and that is entirely normal and is not a measure of anything.
You are not walking this on your own strength, and the psalm never asked you to. Scripture says thy rod and thy staff they comfort me, Psalm 23:4, and the Holy Spirit has been in the car for two years of long ways round without ever once calling it cowardice.
So say it out loud tonight, and make the call in the morning.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the car, engine off. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given to you and two years of long ways round have not withdrawn it. Scripture carries every line here and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. Nothing here sets God a date and nothing here demands that you drive anywhere; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a verdict on you.
- Shame that keeps me driving eleven extra minutes so nobody has to know, you are not humility and you are not staying. The Word of God says I will fear no evil, for thou art with me, and in the name of Jesus I stop reading a wound as a fault in my character.
- Verdict I passed on myself at that junction, get out of this house. Scripture says a bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench, Isaiah 42:3, and the Holy Spirit has never once kept score at a set of traffic lights.
- Lord, the psalm says through and not around, and it gives the companion as the reason and never the courage of the man. I am telling my wife tonight in an ordinary voice, and I am making the appointment in the morning.
