The Easiest Question in the Room

This message is for peace in a mind that will not go quiet

The clippers stop, and the barber shakes the cape out over the bin, and that snap of cloth is the sound that means somebody has gone and everybody moves up a seat.

The shop is full. There is a match on the screen with the sound off and the subtitles running a line behind, and two men by the door are arguing about it in the friendly way men argue about a thing they already agree on. A boy of about six kneels on the chair under the window with his forehead on the glass, counting buses out loud and getting it wrong. The radio is on underneath all of it, and the whole place smells of talc and hot metal.

He is fourth. Then third. He has picked the same folded newspaper off the arm of the chair three times now and read the same paragraph about a bypass, and he could not tell you a single word of it. His eyes went across the line. Nothing came through. It is like trying to hear one voice in a room where everybody is talking, except the room is inside him, and it has been going since Tuesday, or since March, and he honestly could not tell you which.

Then it is him. He sits, the cape goes on, the barber catches his eye in the mirror and says the thing he has said to this man forty times across six years.

"How short?"

And he cannot answer.

Not for a moment. Long enough that the barber says it again, friendlier, tilting the clippers a little to help him along. Two seconds go by that feel like a fortnight, and in those two seconds a man who runs a warehouse shift and signs for forty thousand pounds of stock every Monday morning cannot choose between a two and a three, because the part of him that decides things has been running flat out for months on something else and there is nothing left over for this.

He says "same as usual." It comes out fine. Nobody in that shop notices anything at all.

And you know this, because it has happened to you at the fridge with the door open. In front of two identical loaves. On the phone to somebody kind who only asked which day suits you. The world hands you the easiest question in the room and you stand there with nothing, and afterwards you cannot explain it to anybody, because nothing happened. Nothing was wrong. That is the part that frightens you most.

The Easiest Question in the Room

Nothing was wrong, and it took everything you had

Let me say the weight out loud first, plainly, because you have been carrying it somewhere nobody puts it into words. None of that is mine to declare on my own. Scripture said it first in Psalm 131:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings it the distance.

It is not that you are afraid of one thing. You could name a thing and deal with it. It is that everything arrives at the same volume. The email and the news and the sound the car made and the look somebody gave you on Thursday all come in at once and none of them is more important than the others, and your mind, which is a good mind, tries to hold all of it because holding it is the only way you have ever kept anybody safe. So it runs. It runs while you eat, it runs while somebody is talking to you, it runs at half past three when there is nothing at all to run about. And by the time you get to the chair on a Saturday morning, the machinery that decides small things has been up for weeks and it cannot do a two or a three. Scripture put that in writing long before you read it here, in Psalm 131:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes written words land.

Now hear the thing I care most about saying to you, and I am not going to say it softly and then take it back.

This is not what a lack of faith looks like. Not one part of it. Nobody in Scripture is ever told that a body running hot is a spiritual grade, and I will not be the first to tell you. A mind that will not go quiet is a load, not a verdict. It is not evidence about how much you believe or how hard you have prayed. If it has gone on long enough to be costing you your food and your sleep and your ordinary Saturdays, then there are people whose whole work is helping with exactly that, and walking into their room is not a smaller road than this one. It is often the same road with two of you on it. I have no authority to say that by myself. Scripture carries it in Psalm 131:2, and the Holy Spirit carries it to you.

So put down the second weight. You have been carrying the thing itself, and then carrying the suspicion that carrying it is a failure, and the second one is not yours and never was. That is Scripture's sentence and not mine, Psalm 131:2, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who makes it true where you are.

Now come and stand in a crowd with me.

There is a short song in the middle of the Bible, three verses long, and it was written to be sung out on a road. It belongs to a group of them, songs of ascent, sung by pilgrims walking uphill to Jerusalem in company, with children and animals and everybody's luggage. Not by one calm person alone in a quiet room. In a crowd, going up.

Neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.Psalm 131:1-2

Read what David does not say.

He does not say the noise stopped. He does not say he felt better, or that the great matters got smaller, or that he was finally calm enough to be near God. He says he stopped reaching for the things that were too high, which is the exact diet of a mind like yours: the future, other people's outcomes, the phone call that has not come, the thing that cannot be known by anybody standing on the ground. That is a hundredweight of freight and none of it was ever assigned to you.

And then the picture, and it is not what people think it is. A weaned child is not a child who has stopped wanting his mother. He is a child who has learned that she is there when he is not being fed. That is the whole thing. Quiet did not come to David because the wanting ended. It came because he found out he was held between the feedings.

So the peace here is not a mood you have to manufacture. It is a holding, and it has a Person in it.

Which brings us to the part you may not believe yet. Speaking to a thing that is in your way is not a technique invented by confident people. Jesus set the smallest object anybody in that field could picture, a seed you could lose in the seam of a pocket, against the largest thing on the horizon, and He never once asked for more of the seed. He asked for it to be aimed. Not thought about. Said, out loud, to the mountain. And the authority to do that is not issued by temperament, and it is not held back until your head goes quiet. It belongs to you because Christ does.

The breakthrough

You have been waiting to be calm enough to pray. Scripture stands under that in Psalm 131:2, and the Holy Spirit does the part no sentence can do.

That is the trap, and it is built well. You believe there is a threshold: that when the noise drops far enough, you will finally be in a fit state to speak, and until then it would be presumptuous to open your mouth. So you wait. And the noise, which has no reason to co-operate with a plan that ends in its eviction, does not drop.

Turn it the other way round. The speaking is not the reward for the quiet. The speaking is the doorway into it.

You do not have to feel anything for it to be true. You do not have to believe it well. Your hands can still be doing that thing they do and your chest can still be tight and the room can still be loud, and the words are still words, and Christ is still in you while you say them, and none of it is waiting on your nervous system to sign the form.

And notice where you are. Probably not in a quiet place, probably with the day already going and somebody else in the house. Good. The song those pilgrims sang about a quieted soul was sung on a road with everybody talking, and it was never a song for a silent room. Say it where you are. It is written, in Psalm 131:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes what is written off a page and into a life.

Declare this over yourself

Out loud, where you are sitting, and not in your head, because your head is the room that is already full. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak here has been given to you, and it does not wait on a quiet mind to become valid. The size of the seed was never the bar; where it was pointed was. So speak, and however He answers, and whatever He does with the noise and the pace of it, the outcome is His and the speaking is yours. I am not putting my own idea over you; Scripture says it in Psalm 131:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it live.

  1. Noise that will not go quiet, you are not my judgement and you never had a vote in it. God has not given me a spirit of fear, and the sound mind He gave is mine now, at this volume and at every other. You do not get to decide what is true in this room.
  2. Things too high for me, you are going back to the hands that were always holding you, and I hand you over in the name of Jesus., on what Scripture settled in Psalm 131:2, with the Holy Spirit doing the quieting. David laid down the great matters he was never carrying anyway, and I am laying mine down at the speed of a man learning the road again. Peace, you belong in this house and you are welcome in every room of it.
  3. Lord Jesus, You are the peace I could not manufacture and never had to. I thank You, because You are near in a full room and near in a loud one, and You have never once asked me to go quiet before You would come close. What is Yours is given and not earned, and it is mine now.
