She still reaches for the phone about things, and that is the part that catches her out.
Something happens, something small and specific and exactly the shape of a thing only one person on earth would have found funny, and her hand goes to the phone, and then it stops.
Thirty years.
They met at twenty-four. They were at each other's weddings. They did the thing where one of them moved and it made no difference for eleven years. There is a joke about a caravan holiday in 1998 that nobody else in the world would be able to explain, and now nobody in the world can, because it took two of them to hold it.
It did not end in one afternoon, which somehow makes it worse. There was a thing about money that was not really about money, and then a stretch of being careful with each other, and then two messages that were both a little bit wrong, and then a birthday that went past.
That was three years ago.
There was no funeral. Nobody sent anything. Nobody has ever asked her how she is doing about it, because there is no category for it, and the one time she tried to explain it to a woman at church the woman said oh, friends drift and moved on, and she has never tried again.
And the worst of it, the specific worst of it, is that the person she would have talked to about a loss this size is the person she lost.
That is you, and there is no word for it.

Scripture has a word for it after all
There is a passage in Psalm 55 that is almost never read at anything, and it is the most precise description of your last three years in the whole Bible.
For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.Psalm 55:12-14
Read what he does with it.
He starts by saying it would have been easier if it had been an enemy. That is not a throwaway line, that is somebody who has thought carefully about the difference and found that this hurts in a way hostility does not.
A man mine equal. Not a person he was responsible for and not a person who was responsible for him. An equal, which is the exact relationship you had and which is the one nobody has a bereavement category for.
My guide, and mine acquaintance. Two words for the same person, which is what happens when you try to describe somebody who was several things at once for thirty years.
And then the detail that will get you: we took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company. He remembers the ordinary walking. Not a dramatic scene. The company.
You are not making too much of this. Scripture spends three verses on exactly this loss and never once suggests the man is overreacting, Psalm 55:12-14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries an old psalm into a kitchen where a hand has just stopped halfway to a phone.
Why nobody has asked
Let me explain the silence, because you have been reading it as a verdict on the size of your loss and it is not. None of that is mine to declare on my own. Scripture said it first in Psalm 55:12-14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings it the distance.
There is no ritual for this. That is the whole of it. When somebody dies there is machinery: people know what to say, there is a card industry, there is a week where the casseroles come. When a marriage ends there is at least a word, and everybody understands that the word means something serious happened.
When a thirty year friendship ends there is nothing. No word that carries any weight, no form of words for a colleague to use, and a general cultural belief that friendships are the sort of thing that come and go.
So people are not dismissing you. They are unequipped, and the woman at church who said friends drift was reaching for the only sentence anybody has given her.
You are not being told your grief is small. Scripture treats this loss as one of the heaviest a person carries, Psalm 55:13, and the Holy Spirit does not calibrate a sorrow by whether the culture has a card for it.
Nothing here is going to tidy it
I want to say what this page will not do.
I am not going to tell you what went wrong. You have been over the money and the two messages and the birthday more times than anybody, and there is no version of that inquiry that ends with you feeling better, because it takes two people to know what happened and only one of you is in the room. Scripture put that in writing long before you read it here, in Psalm 55:12-14, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes written words land.
I am not going to tell you to reach out. Perhaps you should. Perhaps you already have. That is a decision with real weight and it belongs to you and to people who actually know the situation, not to a page.
And I am not going to find a lesson in it. Scripture is entirely willing to sit inside a loss and never explain it. There is a psalm that ends on the word darkness with nothing resolved and nobody edited it out.
What I can say is that He was in the thirty years and He is in the three. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, Psalm 34:18, and it puts no requirement on the kind of loss that broke it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that near enough to lean on.
The second loss
Here is the thing I most want to name, because I do not think you have. I have no authority to say that by myself. Scripture carries it in Psalm 55:12-14, and the Holy Spirit carries it to you.
You lost two things.
You lost her, which is the obvious one. And you lost the person you process losses with, which is the second one, and the second one is why this has been so much heavier than it should have been.
For thirty years, when anything happened, there was a phone call. The way you have digested every difficult thing since you were twenty-four is by telling her about it. And the one loss you have never been able to process is the one that removed the mechanism. That is Scripture's sentence and not mine, Psalm 55:12-14, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who makes it true where you are.
That is not weakness and it is not a lack of resilience. It is a woman who has been asked to carry a bereavement without the tool she used for every previous one.
You were not built to do this alone, and this particular loss has taken your usual way of not being alone. Scripture says two are better than one, for if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves somebody new into a chair that has been empty for three years.
Nothing on this page gets her back, and I am not going to write a line that pretends to soften it.
What can change is that this stops being a loss with no standing.
You have been carrying it as though it did not qualify, because nobody sent a card and there is no word and one person said friends drift. And so for three years you have grieved something enormous while simultaneously arguing with yourself about whether you are allowed to. Scripture stands under that in Psalm 55:12-14, and the Holy Spirit does the part no sentence can do.
Stop arguing. Scripture has already ruled on it. There is a psalm in the book that gives three verses to exactly this, from a man who says plainly that an enemy would have been easier, and God kept it in.
You are held in this, and it counts. Scripture says it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance, Psalm 55:13, and the Holy Spirit has been in this kitchen every time your hand has stopped halfway to a phone.
So say it out loud to one person this week, and say it in the terms it deserves: I lost a thirty year friendship and I have never grieved it properly. Not we drifted. The real sentence.
And bless her tonight, by name. Not a prayer that moves her. A blessing that lets thirty years be what they were.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, quietly if that is what there is. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given to you and this loss does not withdraw it. Scripture carries every line and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. Nothing here undoes anything and nothing here asks God for a date; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a verdict on the thirty years.
- Loss that has no name and no card, you are a real grief and you do not need a word to be allowed. The Word of God gives three verses to a man mine equal, my guide and mine acquaintance, and in the name of Jesus I stop arguing about whether I am permitted to mourn this.
- Sentence that says friends drift and it is not the same as a real loss, get out of this kitchen. Scripture says it would have been easier if it had been an enemy, Psalm 55:12, and the Holy Spirit does not measure a sorrow by whether anybody had a card for it.
- Lord, You were in the thirty years and You have been in the three, and my hand still goes to the phone. I am saying the real sentence to one person this week, and I am blessing her tonight by name, and I am letting this count.
