The Phone Face Up

This message is for the son in active addiction, the phone you have kept face up on the table for two years, and the sleep you take in shifts without ever calling it that

It goes on the table at the same place every night, screen upward, volume on, and it has been doing that for about two years.

Face up, because face down means a missed call. Volume on, because silent means a missed call. And at some point in the second year they stopped putting it in another room at night, and neither of them said anything about that change, and it simply became the arrangement.

They sleep in a kind of shift pattern now, although neither would call it that. One of them is always slightly awake. If you asked, they would say they sleep fine.

He is twenty-six. He was here in February, for nine days, and it was very good for six of them.

There is a version of the phone ringing that is him, and there is a version that is a hospital, and there is a version that is neither and is somebody from the family asking how things are, and the third one is the one they dread most because there is no honest answer to it that does not take twenty minutes.

They have stopped going away. Not by decision. There was a weekend in the spring they nearly booked and then did not, and nobody in that kitchen said why.

That is you, and nobody has asked how you are in about eight months.

The Phone Face Up

What this page will not do

Let me clear three things out of the way, because you have almost certainly had all three done to you and every one of them cost you something. This rests on Scripture in Psalm 61:2, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.

I am not going to tell you what you did. Nobody who has not lived in your house is qualified to have an opinion about your parenting, and the people who have offered you one were usually working out their own fear about their own children. Whatever mistakes you made, and you will have made some because everybody does, addiction is not a verdict on a mother or a father and it never has been.

I am not going to promise you he comes back. That is not mine to hand out. He is a grown man with his own account before God and his own road, and no sentence on this page and no line in any song will be aimed at moving his will, because love does not acquire authority over a person by being love.

And I am not going to tell you what to do about the practical side. Whether to answer, whether to give money, whether to let him stay: those are decisions with real weight and real consequences and they belong to you and to the people who actually know your situation. If you are getting support from people who work with families in this, stay with them. That is not a lesser road than prayer and it never was. Scripture already said it in Psalm 61:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.

What I will do is stay with the one who has not been asked about in eight months.

You are seen in this, at the exact point where nobody is looking. Scripture says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart, Psalm 34:18, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that near enough to lean on in a kitchen at two in the morning.

The prayer from the end of the earth

There is a line in Psalm 61 that is worth stopping on because of where the man praying it says he is.

From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.Psalm 61:2

Three things, and each of them is doing work.

From the end of the earth. He is not in a settled place. He is as far out as a person gets, and he prays from there rather than waiting to get back to somewhere respectable first.

When my heart is overwhelmed. He does not say if. He names the state plainly and does not apologize for it, and nobody in the psalm corrects him.

And then the ask, which is the one worth noticing: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Not fix the situation. Not change the person. Put me somewhere I can stand, because where I am currently standing is not high enough to hold this.

That is the prayer of somebody who has stopped asking for the thing to be over and started asking for ground under their own feet, and it is not a lesser prayer. It is the prayer of a person who intends to still be here in a year.

You are allowed to ask for your own footing and not only for his outcome. Scripture says lead me to the rock that is higher than I, Psalm 61:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the leading rather than requiring a person to climb.

The phone is not load-bearing

Now the thing I want to say most carefully, because it is the one that could be misheard.

The phone face up is not doing what some part of you believes it is doing.

You know, in daylight, that a phone on a table does not keep a young man alive. And at three in the morning that knowledge is not available, and the arrangement feels load-bearing, as though the vigilance itself were part of what holds him, and as though a night of proper sleep would be a small withdrawal of care.

It is not. Your being awake is not what stands between your son and the worst night. It never was, and it cannot be, and the exhaustion you are carrying is the entirely predictable result of two people doing a job that was never assigned to them. None of that is mine to declare on my own. Scripture said it first in Psalm 61:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings it the distance.

That is not permission to stop caring. Nobody is asking you to stop caring, and you could not if you tried. It is permission to stop believing that your alertness is a structural component of his survival.

You are not the one keeping him. Scripture says except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain, Psalm 127:1, and it goes on in the very next verse to say it is vain to sit up late, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a parent hear that as relief rather than as an accusation.

And the two of you

One more, and it is between you.

You have been sleeping in shifts for two years without ever agreeing to it, going quiet at the same points in the same conversations, and quietly not booking a weekend in the spring. Scripture put that in writing long before you read it here, in Psalm 61:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes written words land.

Neither of you is failing the other. You are both doing the same thing, which is protecting the other from a version of the fear they already have, and you are doing it in parallel in the same house, and it looks from the inside like distance and it is not distance. I have no authority to say that by myself. Scripture carries it in Psalm 61:2, and the Holy Spirit carries it to you.

Say one sentence to each other this week that is not logistics. Not about him. About the two of you: I have not slept properly since February and I have not said so.

You have not lost each other in this. Scripture says two are better than one, for if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, and the Holy Spirit has been the third strand in that kitchen through every night of the shift pattern nobody named.

The breakthrough

Nothing on this page changes your son's week, and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

What can change is who is holding you.

For two years you have been the one holding: the phone, the arrangements, the family who ask, the hope, the fear, the shifts. And the whole time, the psalm you are living in has been asking for something you have not asked for once, which is a rock higher than yourself to stand on. That is Scripture's sentence and not mine, Psalm 61:2, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who makes it true where you are.

Ask for that. Not instead of asking for him. Ask for both, and ask for your own footing out loud, because a parent who is still standing in a year is worth more to that young man than a parent who ran themselves into the ground being vigilant.

You are held while you hold him, and you were never the thing keeping him. Scripture says lead me to the rock that is higher than I, Psalm 61:2, and the Holy Spirit is the one who leads a person there rather than leaving them to find it.

So bless him tonight, by name, out loud. Not a prayer aimed at moving him; a blessing that leaves him a person and not a case.

Then say one true sentence to the person in the room with you. And leave the phone face up, if that is what tonight needs, and let it be a phone rather than a job.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with your hand on the name. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the standing to speak was given to you and two years have not withdrawn it. Scripture carries every line and the Holy Spirit brings them the distance. Nothing here commands another person's will, because that was never ours; He answers in His own way and the outcome is His, and however He answers, none of it is a verdict on you as his parent.

  1. Phone face up on this table for two years, you are a habit of love and you are not the thing keeping him alive. The Word of God says except the Lord keep the city, the watchman wakes in vain, and in the name of Jesus I hand back a job that was never mine and could never have been.
  2. Belief that a proper night's sleep would be a withdrawal of care, get out of this kitchen. Scripture says two are better than one, for if they fall the one will lift up his fellow, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, and the Holy Spirit has never once required a parent to be the structure holding a grown man up.
  3. Lord, You are the rock that is higher than I, and I have been asking You for him for two years and never once for my own footing. I am writing his name down and blessing him tonight, and I am asking You to lead me somewhere I can stand.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
