The Hill You Started Leaving Early For

This message is for the breath that runs out halfway up the hill, and the map of your life shrinking around it

Halfway up the hill outside the school there is a length of green railing, and for eight months a woman has stopped at it every single afternoon. She always has her phone in her hand when she stops. She always wears the face of somebody who has just remembered something important, and that face is practiced, because it is the only expression that explains a grown adult standing dead still on a slope while forty other people walk past her talking about the weekend.

They go by at their own speed. Somebody says hello. Somebody's dog swings sideways into her ankles and its owner apologizes without breaking stride. And she stands there with one hand on the cold green rail, waiting for her chest to stop being a fist, holding still for exactly as long as it takes to look like a woman reading a message.

She leaves the house four minutes earlier than she used to. That was the first change, and nobody noticed it, herself included, until it had already hardened into a rule. Then she began parking down on the flat by the postbox, which adds a walk and takes away a climb. Then last summer she did not go up to the top field for the fair, and she said, brightly, that she would stay and mind the coats.

That is three streets of your life gone, and there was never a vote taken on any of it. Nobody stood up and announced that the top field was closing. It closed the way things close when a body runs short of air: no meeting, no date, one small sensible adjustment at a time, until the map of where you actually go is a good deal smaller than the map of where you live. You could draw the new one from memory. You have never once drawn it for anybody else.

The Hill You Started Leaving Early For

The room was full, and the power was already in it

Before we go anywhere near what God does with a body, let me say the true thing about what this costs you. You are safe here, and I do not think you have said it out loud in a long while. This rests on Scripture in Luke 5:17, and on the Holy Spirit who makes what is written a living thing.

It is not mainly the pain. It is the surveying. Every room you walk into gets read before you are through the door: where the ground rises, where it flattens, whether there is a wall, whether there is anywhere to pause that looks like a place a person would naturally pause. Which of the two shops. Which entrance. Whether to say yes to something three weeks out when you cannot promise your own chest anything. You are reading ground all day long, you never get to switch it off, and you are the only one in the room who knows you are doing it. That is a particular kind of tiredness and it is not the same as being ill. It is the tiredness of managing something invisible in public, hour after hour, with a pleasant face on. Scripture already said it in Luke 5:17, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the work, not the sentence.

And underneath all that reading of the ground there is a sentence you have never said to anyone, so I will say it for you and you can put your weight on it: I am becoming smaller, and I do not know how to stop it. None of that is mine to declare on my own. Scripture said it first in Luke 5:17, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings it the distance.

Now let me tell you about a house that got too full.

A man had begun teaching in somebody's home, and so many people came that the doorway was blocked solid, wall to wall, no way in and no way through. Four friends arrived carrying a fifth on a mat, a man who could not walk, and when they could not get him near the door they went up onto the roof and took it apart and lowered him down through the hole into the middle of the room. Before any of that happens, the man who wrote the account, a physician by trade, sets down one line that decides everything else in the story.

And the power of the Lord was present to heal them.Luke 5:17

Read where that line sits. It is before the roof. It is before the mat comes down, before a single word is spoken, before anybody in that house has done one impressive thing. The power did not arrive because four men were determined enough. It was in the room already, because He was in the room, and every single thing that happened after that was people reaching into what was already there.

So the only real question about today is whether He is still the same. He is. Not a memory of Him, not a policy He used to run in a warmer century. Scripture says plainly that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever, which means the power that was present in that crowded house is not a story about the past. It is a description of a Person, and He does not travel with less of Himself on a Tuesday.

And notice who received in that room. It was full of educated men who had come from every town to sit and evaluate the teaching. The healing did not go to them. It went to the one who could not get through the door, the one who arrived carried, the one who contributed nothing to his own transport and could not have argued his case if you had asked him to. The crowd was the obstacle, and the crowd did not get the final say. Neither does the hill.

Here is what He asks for, and it is smaller than anybody wants it to be. Asked what it takes to move an immovable thing, He named the smallest seed in the garden and said that much is enough. Not a mountain of certainty to shift a mountain of rock. One seed. And what you do with something that small is not think it very hard. You open your mouth and you speak to the thing standing in your road, by name, out loud, and He said the thing in the road has to listen. You have been asking permission of a slope for eight months. You have never once addressed it. Scripture put that in writing long before you read it here, in Luke 5:17, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes written words land.

And I will not hand you that without also handing you this, because you deserve the whole truth and not the half that sells. God is not a mechanism somebody found the lever for. There was a man who wrote most of the letters in the New Testament and asked three times to have a thing removed from his body, and the answer he got back was grace rather than removal, and no one in two thousand years has called that man short of faith. So the hill may be nothing to you by the end of the month, and the hill may still be a hill. If it is still there, that is not a scoreboard of your believing, and anyone who tells you otherwise is speaking about a God I do not recognize. We carry that weight in this house. You never do.

Nothing here asks you to set down one thing a doctor has put into your hand. Keep the medicine in the coat pocket. Take what you are told to take, keep the appointment, tell them the truth about the railing. God has never once been in competition with the people He gave the skill to. I have no authority to say that by myself. Scripture carries it in Luke 5:17, and the Holy Spirit carries it to you.

The breakthrough

You do not have to reach the top of the hill to do this. That is the thing worth hearing twice, because you have been unconsciously waiting to be well enough to approach God about not being well. That is Scripture's sentence and not mine, Luke 5:17, and it is the Holy Spirit and not this page who makes it true where you are.

The room you are standing in right now is a room the power of the Lord is present in. Not the room you would get to if the stairs were kinder. This one, at this hour, with the coat still on and the shopping not put away. Scripture stands under that in Luke 5:17, and the Holy Spirit does the part no sentence can do.

So we are not going to wait for a better body to hold a better conversation. We are going to speak now, from exactly where the breath is, and we are going to speak to the right things: to the hill, to the chest, and then to the Lord who owns the ground the hill is standing on.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you can hear yourself, because a thing you only think has not yet been said. Speak them to what is genuinely in the way, which is a slope with a green railing halfway up it and eight months of small surrenders that nobody ever announced. You are not addressing that slope as a private citizen with a strong opinion. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the standing to speak here was given to you by the One who owns the ground the hill is standing on. So say it plainly, and then leave the outcome to Him, because the manner and the timing of His answer are His to decide and never once a measure of how well you believed. Scripture settles that in Luke 5:17, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it rather than these words.

  1. Hill outside the gate, you are ground, and the ground is the Lord's, so I walk you as one who belongs to the Owner. The Word of God says the earth is the Lord's and everything in it, which means my map is drawn by the One who made the land and not by a slope. In the name of Jesus I am taking back every street I handed over without a word.
  2. Breath in my chest, Scripture says the power of the Lord was present to heal, Luke 5:17, and the Holy Spirit carries that into this room, where you are held by the One who breathed the first breath into a man made of dust, and you answer to Him and not to a slope. Body, you are not my opponent and I am finished treating you like one. God, You are my Healer, You are healing what You made, and I receive it now, in this room, with my hand on the place that hurts.
  3. Lord, You are present here as truly as You were present in a house so packed that a man had to come in through the roof, and Your power is here to heal. I thank You, because You do not arrive because somebody impressed You, and You did not wait for that room to make space. The map of my days is drawn by the God who made the ground, and the ground is Yours.
